Obviously life expectancy of alloy rims depends on use and various factors -
but with steel rims I've only ever seen worn through plating on dents from
bumping kerbs.

Recently had an alloy rim wear through and break up.

Its not the original from however long I've had the bike - I swapped out a
wheel with damaged spokes maybe a couple of years back.

The rim was too narrow for the V-brake arms, so I never get to wear the
blocks down to the metal backing.

On my commuter bike the summer rims have worn past the 'V' wear
indicator after 6-7 years. They are Alex DM-18's. I do a bit of
heavy braking on a steep downhill shortcut. Spokes are good and I
will get another set of the same rims.

Road bike doesn't get that kind of use and I expect the rims to last
almost forever.

So YMMV.

Not bothering to fix the back brake and doing all the braking with the front
was a contributory factor, and it wasn't a new wheel to start with.

But it did seem to not last very long.
