I ran into that last year when my Joytech freehub cracked. The Shimano
freehub had a different length spindle that the Joytech freehub did (it
was also a different diameter, smaller I believe). Consequently the
spindle would not reach far enough into the hub to engage the
threads. The Joytech hub was threaded on the far side and the shimano
hub was threaded on the near side. The LBS could order me a Joytech
replacement, but in order to get back on the road in the shortest period
of time I just bought a new wheel from them which had the Shimano
hardware. I use the old "broken" wheel on the trainer in the winter
(where I don't coast so the crunchy noises aren't a problem).

Hey, shimano makes some junky hubs also...
And alot of manufactures share the same cassette spline pattern but
use different attachment methods as they don't want to license shimano's
patent for their freehubs.
