Hi everyone,

I have a 2001 LeMond Zurich with full Ultegra group. Very shortly after
purchasing the bike the left STI shifter/brake lever developed a rattle
whenever I roll over bumps or rough pavement. What's the fix? Do the
newer Ultegra shifters/levers have this problem? Are Dura-Ace levers
compatible with my Ultegra drivetrain?

Thanks in advance..

Have you lost the small rubber stop that sits between the brake lever and
the gear change? Or is this just a Campag thing and not shimaNO?

Hi Bill,

I had the same problem and struggled with the problem for a whole
year. By using Blue Loctite on the screw beneath the levers I could
stop most of the noise, but they did not become quiet.

I changed them for Dura Ace levers and all my problems were gone.
Moreover, the shifting quality of the Dura Ace levers (wit Ultegra
rear derailer) is far superior to the Ultegra levers.

I know they are expensive, but in my opinion worth the money (unless
you're deaf). I use the for about 2 years now and they are like new.

Bill:
In my experience with Ultegra STI levers of the same vintage, you won't
be able to completely quiet them. It was simply a defect of the 2000
Ultegra STI levers (even though they are on your 2001 bike). In the
next model year, Shimano
made a minor modification to the levers by placing a small
teflon pad between the inner shifter and the main lever which eliminated
the vibration noise. I emulated this fix
by simply wrapping a rubber band made from an old tube around the
smaller lever, and slid it up to where it is on the metal part of the
smaller lever between the small lever and main lever. This worked to
eliminate about 75% of the rattle noise. I lubed the interface between
the rubber and the
main lever lightly and didn't notice any degredation in shifting. Good
luck on this one.

Mine do it too. Makes you wonder if they test this stuff themselves or just
hope you'll upgrade to DA.

You might find this info of interest. I haven't tried it yet.
