I'm running a 700x28 Conti GP 3000 folding tire on a Mavic 519 24.5mm
wide rim. Can I run a 25mm tire, or less on this rim? How is the size
of a tire vs the rim width suitability determined?

Thanks,
Joe

Joe,

For a complete dissertation on this go to
http://www.sheldonbrown.com/tire_sizing.html

There is a chart in the last part of the article showing what tire widths
go with what rims. Hope this helps

There seems to be some discrepancy between the sizing chart on
Sheldon's site, and the chart available at www.mavic.com.

The chart on Mavic's site lists tire sizes from 1.0 to 2.5. I guess
that these are in inches. This would translate in metric sizes from
25.4 mm to 63.5mm can be used with the F519.

If I guestimate about 5mm for both rim walls thickness, and subtract
from the overall 24.5mm rim width this leaves approx a 19.5 ID.

From Georg Boeger's chart on Sheldon's site sizes from about 28 to
44mm would be suitable for this about 19mm ID rim. Not sure if
Boeger's chart also applies to folding tires.

Unless someone states otherwise it would appear that a 25mm tire is
the lower limit.
