I just put "YHA in New York City" into Google and found a bunch of places
with very good prices. Give it a try.
YHA = youth hostel association.

Look in Yonkers for motels around Tuckahoe road. Holiday Inn and a
Royal Regency. Central Ave. will take you right to the Woodlawn
Station and the #4 train that
you can take you to Brooklyn Bridge and you can pedal to the start of
the ride. there is a ECONOLODGE in the BX near CO-OP City near the #6
train Get there early. REAL EARLY!! Otherwise you could end up way
behind the starting line and if your too far behind a section of the
ride will be cut. Bring food. There are coffe shops near the
beginnign of the ride buthtey get crowded. Forget the first rest stop
unless you really need to. The first stop is always crowded Gettin
on the subway, just buy you pass, swipe it through the turnstile and
then the ticket agent will buzz the gate you you to get through.
Don't count on the sag wagon, it doesn't come through until the end of
the ride. This ride is rain or shine. Get a free NYC bike map at any
bike shop. The concessions in S.I. are expensive. Pick up food at
shops along the way. The ferry will be crowded heading back to
Manhattan. FYI in excess of 30K riders. make sure you have tools and
tubes. There aren't too many hills but it gets hairy going through
Centarl Park. Anything else contact me directly. EX NYC resident

You may want to consider lodging on Staten Island. It's less
expensive than in Manhattan and you will not be faced with the crowds
returning to Manhattan on the ferry following the completion of the
ride. Of course, you will need to get up early in the morning on the
day of the ride to take the ferry to Manhattan.
You will be able to take your bike on any subway train to get near the
start line. Most rail public transit will allow you to take your bike on
trains for the Five Boro. These include PATH, Metro North (Westchester and
Connecticut) and the Long Island Rail Road (Nassau and Suffolk). Extra
ferry boats between Staten Island and Manhattan will start operating at 6
am. So, you are not limited to find sleeping accommodations close to the
start near Battery Park.

Can't help you with lodging (I stayed with friends...L.A.W.
Hospitality Home Directory, R.I.P.) but it's a fun ride. Take a
camera. And yes bring food. Small pack of TP would help, too.

If you bring a full roll, you could hang it off of the back of your
bike flapping in the wind. It would be like a giant streamer, only
less colorful. It would make you look like you were going really
fast. If you starched it sticking straight out the back, it would
look like you were going fast even when you were stopped. Other
riders could ride by and rip off as much as they needed. You'd make
friends and probably cause a couple of accidents,. Isn't that what
it's all about? ;)
