old fart probably knows this is his last shot at it ... and NO shot at
all if greipel et al. show up. he should shut the hell up and ride
his bike.
Why should he or anyone else have to contend w/ competitors bringing
their non-Australian teammates in to help them?
how would you like to have an Aussie
win YOUR national championship ?

everyone else, and eventually even I can win a national championship"

"Age-degraded" is a reality for races and racers.
If you're going to have "XYZ Nationals", then A,B,C...V's go race in
their own "A-V" nats.
Or, call the race "Our Piddling Little Warm-up For the Big Show,
Later.
My club used to run a weeknight crit series, where the last race of
the night was Open-- IOW, Pro, 1, 2, 3, which required some kind of
special di$pensation to the FUCS IMS, so that any of the pros living/
staying in Austin might be tempted to attend.
Ho ho ho, I won a prime one night (while already a Vet way back then)
and boy were they pissed!!! (speaking of "handling bike racing")
I mean, gnashing teeth and the whole bit. Well, tough tonenails, you
gotta ride, guys! I have pictures, too...
(continuing):
Who was that with the zinc oxide smeared all over his face who "won"
the Stars and Stripes while finishing 7th or whatever it was to
foreigners... Eustice.
What a sham. "Well, not very good, but the best we inferior Americans
could do, thanks for the entry fees, guys!"
Nothing against Eusitce, either, he didn't make the rules.

Way back when in CamelotReich, most of the BLRC Road Races were
Pro-1-2-3-Jr-Women
Since in fact Bicycle Racing was illegal on the roads in Britain until
1959, it wasn't smart to extend the total race time any longer than
absolutely necessary
Additionally, since there could be very few entries for any particular
category, the races were, at least in the early BLRC days, run as
Australian Pursuits[1].
See the Percy Stallard item here.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Percy_Stallard
There's a lot of errors in the article and it reads like something
Fotheringham would have thrown together, but it does give some insight
into the state of racing in Britain during the 40's and 50's.
Notably it fails to convey the degree of enmity between the BLRC and the
NCU - often even fist fights broke out between the two factions - and
secondly it doesn't adequately quantify the magnitude of the debt that
British Road Racing owes to Percy for his efforts in those early
years. Nor does it reveal the back room politicking and back stabbing
that was going on in the NCU both before and after the BLRC and NCU had
agreed to amalgamate and the kissy-ass understandings that the NCU had
with the UCI and the IOC which Davey has elaborated upon several times
over the years in postings to RBR.
[1] Not the normal track style Pursuit, but staggered starts for the
categories with each more senior category being handicapped by having
to start X minutes later than the preceeding category: One overall
prizelist only: ie no separate prizes for Pro---Women.
These type events eventually became less frequent as the police
increasingly turned a Blind Eye to "Road Racers"
