NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Some unusual teamwork provided a national championship
in the final race of the 1997 Fresca Junior Cycling Championships.
In the last of the day’s eight criterium races in downtown New Haven,
Philip Zajicek (Landis-Scott Toyota), Tucson, Ariz., won the men’s 17-18
title with some help from Josh Thornton (NECSA), Greene, R.I. The two
riders, teammates on the U.S. Junior National Team, escaped from the field
in the aftermath of a rainy, crash-filled opening of their 50km race.
Thornton, who won yesterday’s road race, had said he hoped to work for
Zajicek today in order to get his Junior National teammates a jersey. The
plan worked to perfection as the field never came with 30 seconds of the
lead pair.
Prior to Zajicek’s win, Janine Verstraeten (Dutch Wheelmen), Orangeville,
Pa., won the field sprint to take the women’s 17-18 championship, her
first title since 1994.
In other action, several riders earned their second national championship
jerseys of the week, including Courtney Hagg (Velocity), Robstown, Texas
(women’s 15-16); Francisco Lechuga (Nutra Fig), Los Angeles, Calif. (men’s
15-16); Sarah Uhl (Team FCCC), Perkasie, Pa. (women’s 13-14); and Julie
Cronin (Tulsa World), Durant, Okla. (women’s 10-12). Lechuga was possibly
the most impressive of the bunch, riding away from his field halfway
through his race and soloing to victory.
Will Frischkorn (Go-Mart), Charleston, W.Va., matched Lechuga’s feat in
the men’s 15-16 event, riding away from the field late in the race.
The first winner of the day was Kareen Harris (Team FCCC), Philadelphia,
Pa., who earned his first championship by winning the men’s 10-12 title.
Racers now shift to the Lehigh Valley Velodrome for the EDS Junior Cycling
Championships, Aug. 6-10, in Trexlertown, Pa.
