But it's really fucking hard to win a bike race - and now we have a
guy that takes the triple ? Last time we saw that was Davide Rebellin
- famous user of EPO and CERA and dq'd out of Beijing silver

Now that there's no more doping in pro cycling, it's still a level

If only Vino's wheel hadn't exploded. Then he might have
won LBL, and since he'd prevent Gilbert from winning the triple,
we could have confidence that the winners are all clean.
Now that Novitsky has scared everyone straight, I expect
that this year we'll see some real suffering in the mountains.

"Killer instinct" may be a requirement for the Classics, but a GC
contender is going to benefit greatly from "talent." But talent still
has to be managed, and who is managing the Schlecks? If they'd been
properly managed, wouldn't they have put a high priority on time trial
performance? Recent results don't show that to be the case.
Day after day after day, Andy has shown he can be there, he can avoid
the big mistakes. But he's not going to do anything spectacular, and
he's not going to win any TTs, so he remains vulnerable to guys like
Alberto Contador and... well OK, not coming up with much of a list after
that!

The Schleck's are optimized for long climbs while Gilbert is optimized
for short anaerobic climbs so the Schleck's needed Gilbert to not be
paying attention à la Boonen in last years PR to win, and it didn't
help to have Voigt tell all and sundry they would be attacking on
Faucons. Gilbert attacked them on Saint-Nicholas which was the only
place they could have attacked and they were never going to drop a
classics rider like him on the flat before the finish. The only other
thing they could have tried was to do serial attacks in the last km
before Ans but its doubtful it would have made much difference. They
probably needed fast twitch fibres more than killer instinct.

Gilbert rode through his home town with the Classics triple well
within his grasp. The Hincapie Twins were riding not to lose.

To be fair, Andy's been the national time trial champion of
Luxembourg three times (once as an U-23, twice as a senior), so he has
won at least three TTs :-).
