Quote from Klaas Faber (WTF is this guy?) in the article:
“They find one or two abnormal values and on the basis of what they
see, they hypothesise and then confirm guilt based off the same data.
If you base a suspicion on the same data that you use to prove the
guilt, it’s an abuse of the data. You need independent data to confirm
the hypothesis.”
Faber may not have the whole story, but so far, what he says here
seems to be the way the data is getting interpreted.

This is the problem I have always had with the biological passport. It's
fine to use it as a tool to fine tune the testing regimen. Testing is
expensive and any way to target a high risk population more frequently is
a good idea (although the BP surely costs more money than what is saved
by targeted testing, which makes it stupid from the outset). But it
cannot be used by itself to hand out suspensions. What the rider is
guilty of exactly cannot be determined from the BP so they can't be
sanctioned over a suspicion. I'm glad that the national federations and
riders are fighting this because, frankly, the UCI and WADA are abusing
the process.
Biological passport = floating in a pond => witch
R
Exactly. The UCI and WADA should treat passport data in the same way
as hematocrit data, as indicative but not conclusive. If they want a
penalty for weird values, do the same thing as with high hematocrit,
label the rider as "unhealthy" and don't let them race until their
blood profile returns to "normal" - assuming they have the slightest
idea of what "normal" is.

Interesting. It would be similar to a celebrity going to a spa
(rehab) so they can recuperate from nervous exhaustion (addiction).
It would save face for the sponsors, teams and riders, and still have
the same ya-ain't-racing-today-bro result.
I guess the biological passport would send them to a Swiss (UCI) spa
(clinic).
R
That's a good idea, but I suggest they have a special "Dope Spa", a
place where all the currently "unhealthy" pros can go and get well.
Maybe it could become a fantasy camp destination for rich masters
racers.

Now you're talking. The opportunity to rub elbows with those skinny
little fuckers and get tips on how to dope and really smack down on
the Sunday morning ride - who wouldn't pay for that?
R
Time Out UCI...?
"Where's Chicken? I haven't seen him in a while."
"Oh, he's a little TOUCI right now..."

He has time now. Just been voted off Denmark's Dancing With The Stars
last night after http://vmd2010.tv2.dk/video.php/id-34629697.html
I needed to dope just to watch that.
