Highlights of this stage on British TV (ITV4) had a scene where they
caught up to the car and driver that caused the accident.

The French TV reporters car was backing into a parking space for press
vehicles after the race. All the occupants were shielding their faces.
The driver was…wait for it…a young women!

Maybe there is a reason former pro’s who actually raced the Tour are
hired as drivers?

Good, that gives more options as to where the mini-pumps should be shoved.

I don't suppose she was busy composing an sms when they caught up with
her, in which case I'm sure the Berliner would like to have a word with her.

I couldn't find that video. Post a link to it. I've also read
reports that someone from the ASO made a point of saying it was a man
driving.

They might have done a switcharoo knowing that a woman wouldn't get
the shit beat out of her.

True, they might have switched. The front passenger was hiding like a
man being hauled away by the police.
You might be able to watch the same Stage 9 highlights here:
http://www.itv.com/itv4/
The in race commentary is the same as Versus (Phil Ligget and Paul
Sherwan), but tends to have more detail from from Chris Boardman and
others.

Yeah I've just seen it, the passenger looked like a woman and the driver a man
but of course that was later and the commentary team didn't know which one was
driving at the time. The woman looked like she was in tears...I suspect she
already knew some serious shit was about to hit the fan.

Cancel that, I've just watched it in slo-mo on the ITV player...both the
occupants were definitely men. Here's the link for anyone WGAS.

I can't get that to play. Does ITV limit playback to the eurozone or
something?

Probably just England, it's done on "a need to know basis" :) I'll try and post
a screen grab tomorrow.

Good idea - they might even make a profit out of the incident and pay
compensation too!

UK only I expect. It's very frustrating. If you go to a German
channel's website you will normally be able to access everything but
the English rights are far more valuable than other languages and so
are highly protected. Same with the Beeb which is a great shame as
the world looks to the Beeb for impartialnews.

I used to listen to my local small town UK radio station on the web
while working in Germany and emailed the DJ about something. He then
boasted on air about how they had listeners far away. The web site
was doctored to UK only quite soon after that once the legal eagles
heard that. Dumb move on my part :-(

I wonder why Liggett kept banging on about Ohio (IIRC) in commentary
when I switched channels for a while the other day. Now I know. If
only somebody would knock Phil bloody Liggett off his bike - nothing
serious just enough to keep him out of France for three weeks he's not
such a bad bloke really - just before the Tour each year I'd watch
ITV's coverage too. 25 years ago he was the only option, but I can't
stand listening to him for more than a minute or two now. Gary Imlach
should do commentary and Liggett should join David Duffield sipping
Pims and sharing memories while watching at home. Having said that,
the bloke who took over from Duffield for Eurosport makes a mistake a
minute and is just as prone to trying to make the mundane sound
exciting as Liggett. "Oh! I do believe he's changed gear there Sean,
what do you think?" In the youthful days of European satellites in
the late 80s/early 90s, when things were technologically less
restricted, you could choose soundtracks on Eurosport. One choice -
and they had the same on Sky's interactive football coverage for years
- was the original feed sans commentary. Bliss!

I love Phil Liggett - insulting him is like insulting Kermit the Frog or
something - how could you?

Because he's a rubbish commentator? He has done a lot of good work
for cycling in the UK in other capacities but commentating is not one
of them. I got fed up with watching when he missed just about every
significant move. At least Dave Duffild was waxing lyrical about
something interesting like the local wine when he missed stuff.
Liggett is so far up the yanks' arses that he's usually prattling on
about somebody's granny in Montana getting up early specially to watch
the race. Why can't he just be British?!

Florian Rousseau was interviewed on French TV yesterday, and he was
talking about the great result the English had at the 2008 Olympics.
That insult should get them fired up for 2012.

These pictures prove that the driver was either male, female or The Loch
Ness Monster. Big Foot is ruled out, as pictures of him are invariably
clearer than this.

That gives you an opportunity to clap yourself on the back for
catching stuff he missed.

I think it's great that you feel secure enough in your own body to
enjoy some guy waxing.

There's no future in it.

Yes, I was going to say the same. In HD, as I first saw, the driver
is clearly a women. So yes, this fits the old stereotype. But what
really matters is how experienced was the driver? Did this happen
because a press car let a VIP drive? What really matters is that they
only use experienced drivers who know how painful it is to have your
race ended like that. Most of the available drivers would probably be
men, maybe even former pros. What a shame!

You had to click on them to enlarge them...knowing to do that's a bit above your
paygrade huh?
