Drank wine with Phil Liggett after a '93 stage of the tdp in Richmond, VA
and he thought Tesh's music was wonderful. He also mentioned Tesh often
used samples of his commentaries in his compositions.

Fingered to Death

Over the past month, during and after the Tour de France, there have been
a number of requests concerning music from the Tour de France.

Most of the music over the years has come from one man: John Tesh
an journalist and composer who has covered 5 Tour de France, many other
classic road races, and famous competitive events.

If that name sounds familar, it is...he was the "co-anchor" for Entertainment
Tonight" and Entertainment This Week" a sindicated international show.

As a result, he was inspired to compose music for these events. Many of which
make for good training music while on a wind trainer, rollers, etc.
Neverless, most record stores pigeon hole him into the "New Age" type
of music and as a result is often very hard to find according to some
overseas email. Then again one person who appears in the thanks you frequently
is Yanni...

As requested here is most of the information that I could find for those
interested in his music, releases, and how to get it.

Note: I am not an employee or otherwise connected to John Tesh, the record
companies, or anyone else who could make anything from posting this.
I am just another cyclist who happens to have hade the same problems
as many others...getting the music from past TdF's, and other events.

Highlights of CD's:
I don't have all...Hopefully at least I can make your buying decision easier.

Tour De France: Early Years
The year I'm unsure of but it came out around the same time as his next one
which made him popular. That is the one most people report seeing, except for
his latest.

I've only seen this one once :( I should have bought it, but I was a broke
college student at the time and could raise $2 ack....

I've heard it played several times in the TdF and a couple of other races.
Sounds more jazzy than any of his other CD's.

Tour De France -I'm listening to this one now DDD for those CDer's
This will be forever replayed throughout TdF history...nevermind any bike
race and many other background music. Scary isn't it when you recognize the
background music during a show, or the news, or the Weather Channel...Yes them.

1. A Thousand Summers 5:11
a classic TdF, Paris-Roubaix, etc. song. Will be found during many times
during a breakaway. Perfect interval song.

2. That Ole Demon Meaness 5:31
used during race background and review scenes -slower, deeper song

3. Bordeaux 6:29
well used to set the stage events ie. upcoming drama. Great for the Alps
and Piriennes (sic) stages. Remember Hinault-Lemond battles???

4. You are Here 6:14 There are actually vocals...his sister(?), Julie Tesh
A typical New Age piece...if there is one.
If you listen you will hear a few cycling greats...Phil Liggett, etc.

5. Day One 5:11 Used for lots of Background music, including ET
found in the very first and last scenes in the TdF

6. Jazzis 5:34
a classic that emphasizes that bicycling is a heroic sport. Used for the
most dramtic stages/battles...Andy in the Giro at Selvio

7. Mike Mercurie 6:13
good for intervals, very modern sound, from slow to fast

8. Olympics 8008 4:00
Used in Paris scenes, once or twice.

Garden City DDD
1. Garden City 4:04
I don't recall this one on any TdF's
mellow, flowing piano

2. Shock 4:20
strong beat, used for stage reviews

3. Elektrik Thom 4:56
nice rythnm, good for rollers and getting a smooth cadence/stroke

4. Bastille Day 4:11
mellow, "feel good" song

5. You Break It 4:42 Vocals
Lead -Michael Hanna
Back- Michael McDonald, Diane Dewitt, Donna McElroy

6. The Black Hole 5:55 Not at all what one would think...
Actually it's the regular song for NBC's Game of the Week in Basketball
Also used for the Past Moment's reviews
Use for TdF's a nice breakaway song.
Very strong and dramatic and upbeat

7. Waltz for Julie 5:19

8. Destination Paris 4:41
'nuff said

9. Bastille Day (reprise) 1:33

Monterey Nights -taken from liner notes
1 Key of Love 5:04
love of guitar via synthesizer

2. April Song 5:31 (fr The Games)
"a song of passion"

3. Goodnight Moon 2:48

4. The Waltz 5:19 (fr Garden City)

5. Garden City 4:03 (" " " )

6. Concetta 3:02 (fr The Games)

7. The Games 5:17
Lead song in a CD tribute to the 1992 Olypmics in Barcelona

8. In a Child's Eyes 3:45 (fr A Romantic Christmas)
A christmas song

9. Monterey Nights (fr Ironman) 5:51
tribute to my perfect Monterey Night

10. Rhapsody in Love 6:33
all sounds blended to support a violin

11. The Endless Road 5:35 (fr TdF: Early Years)
Tribute to TdF Vocals: Diane Dewitt/Jean McLain

12. Wishing for Home 3:00 (fr The Games)
the things althletes have to sacrifice to get "great"

13. Bastille Day (fr " ") 3:52
used for mtn stages, esp in the Alps

Unfortunately, what I really think is the best stuff John Tesh ever put out
has vanished into oblivion. When John was actually doing the commentary
on the TdF for CBS up to 1986, he did all (or most, anyway) of the music
and it was 100% synthesizers, no orchestrations, just good solid tunes.
The last time this particular music was used consistently was in 1987,
when the Tour started in West Berlin (yes, West.). After that came the
Private Music stuff.

This music of which I speak _was_ released, only on cassette, and to the
best of my knowledge was only available in bike shops and through Bike
Nashbar (!!!). But after '87 or so, it just plain vanished off of the
face of the Earth. And my copy got stolen, along with the rest of my car,
in 1991, so I can't give an address from the cassette box. Oh well.
All I can say is that the title was "Music from the Tour de France: Vol. 1,"
and it was NOT Private Music or anyone else you've heard of, either.

Anyway, some of Tesh's later songs, namely about half of _Tour de France: The
Early Years_ and "Shock" from _Garden City_ are heavily embellished (and not
nearly as good, IMHO) versions of the pieces on the cassette-only album.

I miss that album...If anyone has one they'd be willing to sell, or could
dub it to replace my stolen copy, drop me a line.

Hi,

More updates:
The other day the local PBS had on YET AGAIN "Live from Red Rock"

I happen to be turned to WLIW, which is the PBS station for Long Island.
That happens to be John Tesh's childhood area and where he first learned
about music.

What was different about this airing was:
1. he personally came on to pitch for the station
2. showed all of his releases... I missed 1 or 2
3. gave information relating to:
a. concert tours
b. up coming writing

2. He has now at least 10 releases. There is a special 8 CD collection for the
fund raising drive for the station. However, I could only recognize a few of
the CD covers.
Included are: The Games, TdF:Early Years, Romatic Christmas, John Tesh/Live,
and (it looks like) Ironman.

The other 3 covers, I could recognize or discern. Unless they've changed
CD covers, which is possible, there are more CD titles than the 1 CD
title that is added below, John Tesh/Live.

3a. He is triing to fit in concerts in between the projects that he has going
on. For instance, those in the NY metro area can go to the Beacon
Theater in NYC on September 8-10, 1995 (I can't remember which day, it's
one of those 3 days tho').

3b. He's going to start writing again in Spring of 1996. He didn't say when
he'll release the next CD/cassette tho'. I guess late Summer/early Fall???

That correct. In the Tour De France CD, Phil's voice is apparent and
you should be able to make out on of Phil's key quotes also.

Actually, it hasn't.

That was also part of the problem. He would watch the mostly to complete
verision of the days racing and then compose pieces. That meant triing
to compose and finish pieces within say 4-12 hours. I think he said that
meant for some long overnighters and many sleepless night. At least thats
why he stopped doing the TDF's it was VERY Gruelling (sic).

>The last time this particular music was used consistently was in 1987,

Actually it more or less came at the same time as the TDF's he was
broadcasting.

>This music of which I speak _was_ released, only on cassette, and to the
>best of my knowledge was only available in bike shops and through Bike
>Nashbar (!!!).

I STILL have those old catalog's...even the pre-colors ones. Nashbar only
sold one CD and cassette. That was the one called the Tour De France.
It's the one that actually HAS most of the Tour DE France music, unaltered.

I know I've played the pieces inbetween the commericals. It's also the
same music CBS used verbatum for the Paris-Roubiax races also. I still
have that tape somewhere... ALthough the sound quality suxks now, it is
over 8 yrs old it's the same.

In one breakawy scene, there's a 1-1:30 segment of breakaway action with
a solid block of his music from the Tour De France CD. It's a GREAT
Invertal piece...I've done it a few times...

>But after '87 or so, it just plain vanished off of the face of the Earth.

>All I can say is that the title was "Music from the Tour de France: Vol. 1,"

That was the orginal title to the Tour De France CD.
It was called:
"Tour De France: Volume I"

Later on it was called:
"Tour De France"

I never bothered to mention that since The Title is still basically the same.

If you need any more information/proof check the Bicycle Guide Magazine
from 1987 with his (john Tesh) interview in it. I think it's sometime
around just before the TDF, say April or June issue.

I have it at home somewhere. It's scary how he looks at the races for
so long...some 6-12 hours for EACH stage. Ugh...

>Anyway, some of Tesh's later songs, namely about half of _Tour de France: The
>Early Years_ and "Shock" from _Garden City_ are heavily embellished (and not

True. I don't know Early Years as well. I got Garden City for a song
practically, so I couldn't pass it up.

>I miss that album...If anyone has one they'd be willing to sell, or could

I haven't seen The Tour De France CD around lately. I last saw it floating
around in a couple of larger used CD shops around NYC.

You can get anything there...if you know were to look. If not there are
1000's of used and new CD shops there.

Happy hunting.

"In Celebration of Life" is fantastic and has a number of melodies that most of

Years" and "Tour De France" CD's are also mainstays for Tour Music!! Trust me I
have been spending all of my time searching for this stuff (7 years).

By the way, the coverage on CBS and then ABC has gone down hill, mainly because
they have tried to cover the races with a live follow the race approach rather
than shoot the footage, set it against music and then let the commentators
overdub onto the tape. In '87 and '88, that was how the races were done and also
won several Emmy Awards for outstanding production!!! Although they were edited

I agree, especially the opening sequence of that "CBS Sports Sunday", where
you see the Alpe d'Huez crowds parting in front of the yellow jersey (Steve
Bauer) as he climbs laboriously after Rooks & Delgado. With the eerie/dramatic
background music and then fade to black for the CBS Sports theme music. However
the cost of producing that weekly 1-hour show must have been pretty steep,
compared to the ESPN approach (licensing the BBC-4 daily coverage and splicing
in Adrian Karstens to intro/outro the numerous Michelin commercials). Besides,
with CBS you always had to endure some lame Karstens-like commentator who
(unlike Tesh) didn't know anything about cycling or how to pronounce European
names: John Dockery (ex NY Jets' cornerback) ? Tim O'Brian ?

With this amount of writing, concerts, and appearances to support the

Never mind to do any of announcing on any sports event.

I was just digging online to see if much has ever surfaced regarding Tesh's first cassette of TV music. 30 years ago I dubbed a copy from a friend and discovered that I still have it. I'm going to rig things up and make mp3 files of the tracks.

This is an old thread, but...
I have been going nuts for a week now, trying to find an old set of John Tesh Tour de France songs/LP. Back in 1989, I was given a cassette from a guy in college who was into cycling...he knew I was into synth music. It was a Tesh Tour de France album, BUT none of the currently listed "Tour de France" albums from that time frame seem to match the song list I recall. The song list I see for Tour de France and TdF The Early Years seems shorter (though some song titles seem familiar). What I do know there is at least one song missing from the LP's that I can find that I am looking for...I think it was the opener on this cassette I had, it was synth heavy, fairly fast paced, had strong brassy power chord opening to it...and I have not found this track on youtube anywhere, and it doesn't seem to match any of the tracks listed on the Tour de France albums. I still have this cassette somewhere, but can't find it. Is it possible it a rarer issue, and does it happen to be this cassette you mentioned? This is driving me nuts, I know I am not imagining this.

Only partially.

Tesh's first release was done on cassette, as "Tour de France Vol 1",
which was stuff that was used on the air during his time at CBS. It was
an audition tape, as much as anything. The original release was done by
Drama Labs.

The stuff that has been released on CDs is later -- additional pieces,
and a number from the first one that have been remixed or rearranged.
That's all good stuff, but it's not what went into the original
compilation (including the edgy synthesizer music).

I also had a copy of that tape that I really liked, and I managed to
lose it when I lost a tape case.

I'd love to see a copy of that tape, but I'm doubtful that it's going to
be possible, and even if you can find something, it's likely to have all
the issues of a cassette that was made in the late 1980's. eBay might
be a better source than Amazon.

Beyond that, I will note that I've been able to hear some of the music
off of YouTube, where a lot of the CBS broadcasts that Tesh did until
his departure in 1986 (and even up to 1988, when CBS was still doing
cycling) can be watched.

For what it's worth, I have a long-time affection for the 1988 broadcast
(which I was able to videotape when recorded). The music there is as
much Yanni as Tesh, but to me, is nearly as satisfying. And I do have
most of Yanni's stuff that was used.

Craig, thanks for taking a shot. I have seen the currently available and referenced LP's, including the one you linked, and none of them are it. As Smith posts, this was something a bit different...it subsumed some of the tracks on these ones that are floating around out there, but there were definitely a few additional ones. I am stunned that I can't actually find any kind of legit reference to it...it is almost like a myth, except I know it wasn't because I have it somewhere lol. I can almost vaguely see the names of the tracks in my head even, it was so long ago I can't remember. But I can hear the songs in my head. The person who gave it to me was an avid cycler, it is entirely possible he picked it up in a bike shop...maybe it was a promotional item or something. It was freshman year of college, fall of 1989, on cassette. And it definitely isn't any of the currently published or listed albums though it was definitely a "Tour de France" issue.

Not being particularly fond of music with the exception of Callas,
Kathleen Ferrier et Alii, I am not entirely sure what you want.

You if you point a browser or other capable user agent in the direction
of
"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QrvjQYUZZD8&list=RDQrvjQYUZZD8&start_radio=1&t=37"
[no quotes] I believe you will find substantially what you are looking
for, or at least an acceptable substitute.

The example you've given is from the John Tesh 1988 Tour de France CD, the cassette tape I'm speaking of is from 1987 and can be heard on any 1987/1988 CBS broadcast on You Tube...it's completely different.

I recently came across this on YouTube. There are a group of tracks from the tape - I don't think it's complete, but it's all I've been able to find.
