Solution is to update an SSL certificate manually. In English, with
screen shots: http://ewoud.home.xs4all.nl/misc/es_tb_cert_en.html

Thanks for this. However, I still can't get thunderbird to work. I CAN see
the newsgroups in OE with eternal-september, but I much prefer the
thunderbird interface. I am using windoze XP.

Try "news.aioe.org" instead? Works for me in Thunderbird. Both in
Windoze XP and 7.

You can always just use the plain port 119 connection, no SSL/TLS. Not
much that can be sniffed except your eternal-september.org account
credentials with username and automatically generated password.

I tried it--ng. Perhaps my thunderbird got corrupted.
Meanwhile, I'm trying Mower Man's suggestion of aioe.org, and it seems
to be working fine.

Thanks to you both!
