As a wise man once said "Cycling has gotten cleaner than Kirstie
Aleey's dinner plate' and this year's tour - more than anything -
sealed the concept that cycling without drugs is just bike riding.

With that in mind - what are the greatest dope fueled cycling
performances of all time. Bonus points for posting a video link since
more than likely most of these all occurred in the EPO/CERA years.
( 1991 - 2008 ? )

To get one obvious choice out of the way.... Ricco's in 2008 -
inspiration to all.

It's as exciting as watching cars drive by on the interstate highways,
as opposed to watching the Indy 500. Good observation. People want to
see supermen, and you don't get that without a little help from that
black bag.

dumbass,

i agree like rock n roll, the best cycling performances are also drug
fuelled.

this is one of my favorite videos, vdb in the vuelta :

other great ones :
-vdb's LBL
-furlan's milan san remo (he still holds the record for the fastest
ascent of the poggio).
-pantani's '99 giro
-mayo's alpe d'huez
-chiapucci at sestriere

When I was in high school (late 70s) there was a guy at
one of the other schools in town that ate a bunch of
white cross before a big football game and broke the
conference rushing record. He was a gifted athlete to
begin with, no doubt about it.

He wound up with football scholarship to what would
eventually be a Div I school, Div I didn't exist yet.
To me that was a landmark because it was my first example
of PEDs paying off.

I can't imagine how the coaches didn't figure it out. Or
maybe they did. How do you bench a guy for something that
you know you can't prove? And especially when he is having
the game of a lifetime for you? They kept calling his
number, I know that.

Dumbass -

Rominger's hour record. It was just supposed to be a 'test'. He didn't even
have the ultimate bike.

thanks,

How about Bjarne Riis (Mr. 60%) on Hautacam in 1996:

Three questions come to mind...

1. Did Indurain get a bad batch of EPO?

2. Why does Riis remind me so much of Young Frankenstein when he
grimaces.

3. Why did the video editors think mid 80s porn music would be
appropriate from 3:05 -3:40? I keep expecting to see Christy Canyon
enter the frame.

Going from 53.7 to 55.2km/h in under 2 weeks, is spectacular indeed.
And a Ferrari associate too.

If it ever comes out, it would be interesting to know what the
substance regime was in order to make that leap.

> He didn't even have the ultimate bike.

Rominger was one of those like Boardman, supreme body position for TT.
Bike not so important IMHO when tis so.

Indurain OTOH, looked like he was standing up by comparison.
His raw power in road TTs (on inclines, into the wind etc) counted for
nothing in the track env, super bike or not.

Ooh, bad one to choose for Armstrong fanboys.

Jalabert somehow had managed to stay within 5 mins of Pantani on
GC up to that last day in the mountains.

The Jalabert who (throughout his career in general, and 1999 in
particular) , was substance tested so often that Armstrongs
notion of "tested so often" by comparison would look like
having a birthday party.
