Having been out of the MTB(or ATB as it was called back in my riding days)
loop for quite a few years and rejoining the ranks of the fat tire set, a
term keeps popping up in mags. What is a "freeride" bike?

A bike with lots of suspension, but pedals well enough to
still do reasonable climbing. They are marketed to people who
are not so concerned about efficiency climbing, but want to
thrash downhills.

They are like "enduro" motorcycles. Go anywhere, do anything. Too much
mass for serious racing but great for guys over 200#. Gotta have disc
brakes to truly be a freeride machine. Big forks like Hanebrink G-series
really make the difference. You can still climb with their low gearing but
point them downhill and let the fun begin...

Thanx! Being one of the "over 200#ers" I am gonna look more into them. I
need a new bike.

Thanx again

My definition of a freeride bike (I'm a XC rider) is a bike between a XC and
downhill bike. That is to say, the frame is usually heavier and more
durable than a XC bike because of the riding people will be doing with it
and it usually will have more suspension travel than a XC bike but less than
a downhill bike.

I've always thought the Specialized Enduro FSR Pro was a pretty cool bike
(it's the cousin of my XC bike):
