We are going to spend a week in Maui in June. I really know nothing about
the island and am wondering if there are any good riding there?
Suggestions? Web pages to check out? Bike shops to visit? Books to read?
Also where would a good place be to rent a bike? Thanks for any help.

Peace,
Chip

Try here: http://www.bikehawaii.com/

It includes info on local bike shops. While I haven't tried to rent in
Hawaii, it does appear to be the exception to rent bikes of any decent
quality. Not surprising when you think about the abuse that's typical.

Maybe a local can offer better advice.

When I was there a couple of years ago I inquired about mountain
biking. There are lots of companies that will drive you up to the top
of the volcano (Haleakala I think) at 5:00am and you get to "ride"
down in a big group. But I was told there is not much in the way of
trials to ride and you have to be careful as there are lots of people
living up in the mountains that will shoot at you if you come near or
on their property.

Chip,

Mountain Biking the Hawaiian Islands, by John Alford, covers all the
islands. I used it for biking Kauai in January. Its maps are 3-dimensional
so you get a feel for the vertical effort involved. Bike shops listed as
offering rentals include:

The Island Biker (808) 877-4477
Hawaiian Island Center
415 Dairy Road
Kahului, HI 96732

South Maui Bicycles (808) 874-0068
1993 #5 South Kihei Road
Kihei, HI 96753

West Maui Cycles (8088) 661-9005
193 Lahainaluna Road
Lahaina, HI 96761

Extreme Sports Maui
360 Papa Place #F
Kahului, HI 96732

Also:
Maui Mountain Bike Club
PO Box 689
Makawao, HI 96768

I found that listings for Kauai were out of date and that places listed as
Rentals or Tours did not offer those services any longer.

Check out web sites by searching on "Bicycles" and "Hawaii"

I was in Maui for my honeymoon in Nov 1999. Great place to vacation!
The only biking we did in Maui was the volcano ride through Aloha Bike Tours
http://www.mauibike.com/ - They run a great tour! Marc and Karen do the
tour themselves - it's not some big company. They let you do it at your
own pace, great bikes, homemade food, and very knowledgeable on the area.
>From what I could tell, the other volcano tours herd you down like animals
as fast as they can.
As far as mountain biking on Maui - Marc from Aloha Bike Tours told me that
there is only one LEGAL single track trail on the island.
For single track - I believe the other islands have more. We also stayed
at the Molokai Ranch on the island of Molokai for a few days - that's where
some serious single track is! It's a very cool place - a little
different - like camping at the Hilton, although they did just open up some
rooms at the deluxe lodge. Check out their web page:
