What is wrong with that American approach to riding a bike?

"Everything," if you ask me. And yet many people with such routine are
happy with the prevalent conditions. "What about MAKING IT SAFE to
ride everywhere?" Blank stare follows. Nobody knows the answer.

How about if you question the safety, congestion and pollution
associated with the truck? Here we got such a riding place at Key
Biscayne, where very few roadies ride all the way. We also have Oleta
River, where people go mountain biking in a place without mountains.
If you want to ride in, good luck. You may actually put yourself
through a similar challenge by riding sidewalks in a fast way, bumps,
branches and broken pavement abounds. But you may not have a need for
your toys.

So it is that "stupidity meets the bicycle."
