I have an old Rhode Gear Cycle Shuttle bike rack. There's a 60" elastic
cord used for securing the bike onto the horizontal bars. The cable is
like bungee cord material, although a little thinner in diameter than
most pre-made bungee cords. The elastic has gotten all streched out and
slack from age and use. I'd like to replace it.

As far as I can tell, Rhode Gear has gone out of business. Seems to me
that the elastic cord should be something common that you could pick up
in any number of places, hardware stores, whatever... but I can't seem
to find it anywhere. I find lots of pre-made bungee cords, but not the
raw cord. The premade ones are usually too thick and too short.

Maybe I'm calling this stuff the wrong thing. What is it really called?
Searching for "bungee cord" gives me only premade ones. Can anyone
suggest an on-line source for it?

Marine suppliers sell it, too:

Not sure where you are, but I bought a cord made out of that material at
the local Daiso store in the bicycling section. It has one hook on it,
and a loop that you slip-knot the hook through, but you can always cut
the hook and the loop off. It's 8' long. Black and thinner than the
standard bungee cord material, though thicker than the short mini-bungee
cords. I think it was $1.50.

I think this is it:

They don't sell single quantities on-line.

U.S. stores are at

I had a similar problem, and I found a replacement at an outdoor-
hiking-camping-kayaking store.

Aha! That was the magic word. Once I knew what the common name for this
stuff was "shock cord", I called around and I found that REI had it. A
quick trip over there, and 40 minutes and $1 later, my bike rack is
fixed.

Thank you, everybody for your help in this. It was such a simple thing,
but it was becoming frustrating.

Try any sporting goods store that carries backpacking or climbing
supplies. They will sell the "shock cord" or bungie cord material in
"cut to length" amounts.
