Karen Holtz is a very prominent member of Team Oregon, not to mention
the fact that she is a very sweet person in general. Last Saturday
(2-1-97) she was struck from behind by a drunk driver and as a result,
received some major head injuries and is currently at Emanuel Hospital
on life support. I don=92t know too many details but from what I have
heard, things don=92t look good.
This is a reprint from the Sunday Oregonian:
A Northeast Portland woman riding a bicycle westbound on North Marine
Drive was struck by a car Saturday before it veered into an embankment.
Karen L. Holtz, 35, suffered head injuries in the accident, although she
was wearing a helmet. She was in critical condition at Legacy Manuel
Hospital.
Samuel Gonzales-Lopez, 34 of Southeast Portland was driving his car west
when he hit Holtz from behind shortly after 4 p.m.
the impact knocked Holtz onto the windshield of the car, and the car
then veered to the south side of the embankment, said Officer Henry
Groepper, a Portland Police Bureau spokesman.
Although police did not issue Gonzales-Lopez a citation, Groepper said
they suspect alcohol was involved. The accident remains under
investigation.
