I haven't stretched or warmed up before getting on the bike since we
moved from New York to Indiana twenty years ago, if you don't count
imitating a cat who is about to leap before I swing my leg over the
top tube.

(It would work better if I had a tail to twitch.)

But for the last few years, I've been doing stretches and warm-ups
before I get out of bed.

Well, there is no question that as one ages one does get "stiffer". My
problem is a hip I broke 10 years ago that is now causing me some
discomfort. I found that by doing daily "stretches" I get around much
easier but of course, if the hip isn't bothering me I forget to
stretch and so the next day it is worse (:-(

In a brief online discussion about a year ago, I mentioned that as our
tandem's "captain," I sometimes use the alternative method to mount the
bike: by swinging my right leg forward and up, over the handlebars, to
the other side.

One respondent was a nationally known cycling writer, a guy who actually
wrote a book on tandeming. He said something like "Frank, that doesn't
work for those of us who haven't maintained flexibility over the years."

So far I've been lucky. Maybe it's time to take up yoga?

I haven't had that kind of problem, but I know that I need a lot more
pre-ride stretching than I used to.

When I was a runner in high school, I learned to stretch properly before
going for a run.

As a cyclist, I don't do things as thoroughly, but I know my physiology
well enough that there are two or three stretches that I generally make
sure I do before I get on the bike.
