I just bought a pair of Vasque Sundowners and would like to know how to treat
them if at all. I have a bottle of NikWax Aqueous Was Leather Waterproofing.
Should I use this on the boots to condition the leather? I figured that after
the GoreTex bootie died I waterproof them, should I start now?

So much propane, so little time...

I know there are many NikWax lovers out there, but I was not too happy with
its performance on my son's fabric/leather boots. It required frequent
reapplication (every trip, as I recall) to stay half-way effective.
I just got him new all leather boots and used REI's Ultra seal. It's a
silicone paste. We haven't been out yet so time will tell, but it seems to
soak into the leather quite nicely.

Good luck

So there's nothing I should worry about clogging the GoreTex? or ruining the
supposed breathibility of the leather/GoreTex boot? How about a product that
lets the GoreTex handle the waterproofness but conditions the leather? I just
want to make sure the leather and boot holds together so when the GoreTex goes
( like it did in my old Vasque boots ) I can still waterproof the boot. Thats
one of the reasons I bought the full-leather Sundowners.

I just thaought I'd add my two cents in on this. NikWax is an aqueous solution, it's not meant
to seal boots permanently, it's designed to wear off after a certain amount of use. It's also
supposed to be better for your boots than silicone sealers. I don't remember the details but
silicone sealers are said to alter the leather of the boots, for the worse. WL GORE recomends
Nikwax for Goretex and I believe that Vasque also recomends it. I guess I'm biased just like the
previous respondant, he had bad luck with Nikwax, I had bad luck with Silicone.

P.S. I've never found ANYTHING that could waterproof a fabric/leather boot!

The Vasque Nature Seal and another brand named "Aqua Seal" are excellent
and very long lasting on newbriers, which are like sundowners but with
the raw leather on the outside. They condition and protect the leather
while making water run off completely and immediately.

both the aqueous nikwax and the nikwax paste should work. at least
that's what i was recommending when i worked at REI. the advantage to
putting a few coats on now before you use the boots, is that the
waterproofing will soak into the boot better and secondly, the leather
is already being treated before it gets banged up a whole lot.
since the nikwax is *water* based, it doesn't saok into and clog the
gore-tex membrane like silicone or oil based treatments do.
so your best bet is to treat your sundowners now with the nikwax and
then wash them off good after each use. the leather should stay
healthy and your feet should stay dry.
do remember to get your boot wet when applying the nikwax. it helps it
soak in better.
