I am wondering what are peoples favorite products/methods to seal their hiking
boots . . . espically the welt seams. I have had some non-successful
experiences lately.

While there are several products specifically for this purpose (such as
Welt Seal and Stitchguard) I personally prefer Black Diamond SealCoat.
It's designed for sealing seams of tents and other materials. Another
recommendation is AquaSeal. There are several "AquaSeal" products, get the
one designed for sealing repairs in wetsuits. It comes in a tube and
should not be confused with AquaSeal Liquid (a waterproofing for fabric &
suede boots)) or AquaSeal paste (a waterproofing for leather boots).

I actually tend to use 12% silicon sealant, which has worked fine for me,
although some people I know have highly reccomended "Aqua Seal", which is
a lanolin-based sealant.

Hope that helps!

A cobbler suggested to me to scrub out the welts with acetone first to remove
any oils or wax from waterproofing as this will prevent the sealant from
adhering to the leather.

Currently I use Shoe Goo. I have tried Seam Grip. I reckon BlackDiamond's
Seal Coat would also work.

Ultimately, its a lossing battle, IMHO. If you stand around in
soaking conditions, you welts will leak eventually. If you find a way
to prevent it, get a patent! Riches await you.
