A friend of mine is planning to go to the air show in Oshkosh
Wisconsin at the end of July. Does anyone know of a campground in this
area ? A tent only campground would be preferred.

The EAA(*) runs a campground on the airshow site itself. The big advantage
to using it is that once you're set up, you don't need to hassle with
driving, parking, traffic jams, etc. They also set up food service tents
on the grounds which offer reasonably-priced reasonably-good food. As
these sorts of things go, the people in the campground are pretty
considerate (minimal noise, lights, etc.) There are even scheduled
events in the evenings (talks, movies) which are held next to the
campground. What with some days seeing several hundred thousand people
on-site, your friend is going to be dealing with crowds, anyway.

Another area is set aside for tent-camping IF you flew in (you camp by
your plane.)

There MAY be a tent-only portion of the on-site campground. Call the EAA
in Oshkosh, Wisc. for more details (they're in the phone book.)

Anything "near" Oshkosh has almost certainly been booked solid
several months in advance-- it's a *huge* event. The EAA has a
"Housing Hotline" at (414)235-3007, weekdays 8-4 (Central time).
Many Oshkosh residents take their vacations during that week and
rent out their homes to groups of EAAer's, so you may still be
able to find one of those. There is a large campground on the
convention site (Camp Scholler), but it's pretty crowded.

Otherwise, you can stay somewhere` further away and drive in
each day. I usually drive up from Madison both Saturday and
Sunday (about 80 miles each way). The gates open at around 8:00
and the airshow ends around 5:00 (you may want to leave before
the airshow ends to avoid the worst of the traffic jam). I also
recommend a "tailgate" lunch and supper-- the food available
on-site is edible, but nothing to write home about. Other
essential equipment includes sunscreen, sunglasses, hat,
raincoat, and comfortable walking shoes (the field is huge, and
there are very few trees).
