I thought a nice ale on the Alaskan tundra would be nice......

I don't know about ale, but a reasonable way to economize on weight
is to pack PGA, or Everclear. I don't know about it's availability
in Alasaka, but it was sold in Colorado when I was a kid, and
most Western states I think. It's ~98% grain alcohol, so you
won't be drinking it neat, but you can dilute it with spring
water down to whatever strength you like. Once you do this,
it's basically indinguishable from commercial vodka IMO.
Since you're not going to be dehydrating any alcohol, this
might be your best bet. One more thing... you might want to
mark the bottle, so you don't get it confused with your fuel
bottle! ...or worse, your water bottle! One good slug of this
stuff (if you could hold it down) would make you DANGEROUSLY
drunk, which might not be your intention.
Have fun.

How 'bout some 151 rum? You can make some pretty
radical hot chocolate with it! We call it: "Koo Koo Cocoa."
Just a thought!

Sure, you can get this magic powder. Simply add water, and before
you know it, you'll have alcohol! I swear its true! Hey, I'll even
give you the recipe!
Mix some yeast and sugar. Thats all there is to do to make the
magic powder. Add water, and wait. Presto! You'll have your
alcohol. If you like, you can replace sugar with fruit juice
of other forms of carbohydrates.

Just a hint on a flask. Coleman sells a nice one. Got one at K-Mart, of
all places. Maybe you could carry GOlden Seal alcohol and boost something
in another flask.km
That process is called D-I-S-T-I-L-L-A-T-I-O-N. Buy some 151 rum,
and thin it with powered fruit drinks. Umbrella optional.

Anyone ever notice that alcohol doesn't freeze? Maybe put vodka in the
freezer for a year or windshield wiper fluid in your car?
Anyone ever hear of fermentation? Yes, you can just add water to yeast
and sugar and sit and wait, but I hope your not in a hurry to drink this
supposed "instant alcohol.
Maybe you should get a small engine plane to air drop something to you or
the Budweiser frogs to act as your pack animals?

believe it or not, REI used to have freeze dried beer. It came in a little
packet like kool aid or something like that. It was ok.. there was no
alcohol in it though. you had to add vodka to have it alcoholic. I tried
it two years ago and it was not that great (as you can well imagine). The
worst part was that it wasn't very carbonated. It had a little bit of a
head, but just WASN'T the same. REI doesn't carry it anymore, and I haven't
seen it anywhere else.

A few years ago a man in Fairbanks drank from a bottle of vodka in his
car (it was about -60 F). It froze his lungs, etc., and he died.

The last time this thread came up, some poster suggested Metamucil and
Everclear as a substitute for freeze dried beer. Said it tasted better,
tasted more like beer, and was better for you!

yea that fermentation thing takes a while. I brew beer and it usually
takes a month. I just pack in a 1/2 pint of Jack Daniels for uh medicinal
reasons. Whiskey and branch is a nice relaxing drink and the best branch
water comes from those nice cool mountian streams.--

My favorite cough medicine is a mixable like PGA, vodka or gin. Add spring
water and flavor powder (I used pineapple-orange Kool-Aid on my last
trip). Bingo! Gin and juice. To make it go down smooth, freeze one of your
water bottles.

Zealots recommend cutting off part of any brush handle and boring
holes into it, to cut weight to "about .1 ounce." One of these days
I guess I must stir myself to zealotry.

Oh, bullshit!
Joe
Carry Everclear (or an equivilant). At 190 proof (95% alcohol) it's about
as condensed as you're going to get. I've carried it before and used it
in a coffee/hot choc. mix for a boost after getting hiked in and camp
made. You can also use it as a foot bath, disinfectant, fire enhancer.
Just kidding on that last one. 8^)

clearly we're talking about American beer :-)

Well, maybe. I don't see how it would freeze your lungs. But I do`
remember a news article from when I lived in Anchorage - several
snowmobilers chugged vodka in -40F temps and got frostbite in their
throats. Not fatal because they were able to get out quickly, but
the swelling could have suffocated them.
Well, you can dehydrate booze. Since most "spirits" are only about 40%-50%
alcohol, the rest being water and flavoring, you can take the "active" part
in the form of grain alcohol at about 95%. It will be hard to get a good
ale flavor by adding various things to a water+alcohol mixture, but
you can make a decent mixed drink (e.g. screwdriver) from the very hard
stuff, water and juice mix.

I recall that a Japanese company was experimenting with powdered
alcoholic drinks for the coin-op business. I was led to understand that
they had succeeded in creating a powdered scotch that was quite good.

And you dont actually need yeast. I have heard rumours that
human fecal matter is equally good to start fermentation.
Summa summarum - all you need is an empty airtight can to
make your own backcountry beer.

Finally!!! We've come full circle. We *should* be
drinking drieclty from the stream.

I remember reading about powdered alchy a while back. The
liquid was encapsulated in soluble pellets. I don't remember
what happened to the concept. The other way is to condense
the "quality" you wish to enjoy. This means either Everclear,
151 Rum, or the most expensive Cognac you can find.
