MSR Whisperlite problems?

Has anyone had any major problems with the MSR Whisperlite? Last weekend I was in New Mexico in cold weather when my stove just gurgled little amounts of fuel out and then just stopped working all together. I
thought that this might just be my stove BUT the same thing happened to a Whisperlite International. Eventually, that stove started working but a LOT of fiddling. Tonight, I took the stove completely apart, cleaned
the fuel tube and woked on the jet and it still didn't work. I tried two different sources of fuel with no success. When I pulled the fuel tube off of the pump, a LOT of gas poured out of the tube. Tells me that
somewhere things are clogged up. Anyone else had this happen to them. My next thing to so is to soak the entire stove in solvent and then see that happens. Another question: Has anyone ever tried a bigger jet
or enlarged the jet on one of these stoves to increase ouput (a nice thing when melting snow for water when there is no water source available due to everything being frozen)?

Thanks,

Scott Olds

DO NOT MODIFY the jet. I had a set of jets modified in our machine shop
and then tried them all, and they all worked worse than the stock ones.
You want clean stock jets. Maybe you should have bought the stove with the
shaker jet? Another thing, the steel cable in the fuel line can become
covered with black carbon compounds. Remove it and clean the whole thing,
you may have to reverse the cable ends to get it back into the fuel line.
Also, remove the screw in the center of the burner and clean any built up
residue off the burner plates.
If you want higher reliability for melting snow, use an XGK with a
heat exchanger on yer pot, but it won't simmer. Good luck (:->) Jim

Also ensure that the rings are centered exactly. I managed to get mine
a bit off to one side, partly covering one of the little holes in the
burner cup. It would light fine and burn OK, but only for a couple of
minutes. Then it would start to 'chug', almost as if it was running
out of fuel. Centering the rings fixed the problem.

I would not recommend removing the flame rings from your stove. The only
time you would need to remove them is to replace them.. Do this if they
looked warped out of shape. I would recommend sending it in to MSR to
have them replace the rings and clean the fuel line etc. if you've got
this problem. It is hard to get the rings tightened to the right pressure
(which affects performance) and perfectly aligned.
Maintenance on your MSR stove consists of four things. Cleaning the jet,
fuel line, oiling the pump cup, and replacing O-rings.
Regarding residual fuel in the fuel line after shutting off your stove,
that's normal.

I had a problem with my Whisperlite a couple of years ago so I called
their 800 number. The man I talked to was very helpful and and my problem
was solved over the phone.

My old whisperlite pre ignites- it burns just above the jet, making a huge noise. Seems to do it when the stove is used for a few minutes. I have done all the usual cleaning etc. It is an older model with a shaker jet in it. Plenty of fuel is getting through. Does anyone know what the problem might be? Dan. New Zealand

Without seeing it, it would be difficult to say for sure but it sounds like a
leak in the system. If so you might be able to tighten something but more likely
you need to replace a part.
