A Great Smoky Mountain NP volunteer and frequent poster to the HTS
discussion board (http://web.utk.edu/~broach/HTS) sent this disturbing
message:

"I heard a report today of two hikers being murdered in N.C.! Since I
haven't been able to get any info yet would all who have heard when,
where, how, why, by whom, etc. please let the rest of know"

One can't help but think that some hikers may possibly have stumbled upon
fugitive Eric Rudolph and tried to be heroes. If anyone can contribute,
please join us on HTS (address above) or post here.

Thanks,
joseph

More details can be found in todays Charlotte Observer
(http://www.charlotte.com/). The suspect is not Rudolph although
according to sources in the article may have been inspired by him.

Another thread in rec.backcountry: "Beware in Burke Co, N.C. Killer
loose!" discusses this.

Apparently, it wasn't Rudolph, but an admirer of Rudolph. Check out the
story at http://journalnow.com/news/local/local/northcarolina/gorge04.htm

It indicates that the suspect could still be hiding out in the gorge.

According to Winston-Salem Journal August 4th, 1998

Burke County Sheriffs Department is on the lookout for James Andrew Finley,
Jr., a 21 year old from Hickory, N.C. The victims, Derek Marston and Tommi
Danielle Bryd, both of Charlotte, were found dead by a group of hikers Sunday
Morning. Both were 24. The killer is said to admire Eric Rudolph and is
seeking attention for himself. Apparently, the campers in the Linville Gorge
Area did not know the killer.

Another Suspect Hides in N.C. Woods

PEKIN, N.C. (AP) -- The suspect in the weekend murder of two campers
in western North
Carolina was fascinated by the search nearby for alleged clinic
bomber Eric Rudolph and may
have sought similar attention, authorities said.

Law officers using helicopters and dogs searched
a heavily wooded area today for James
Andrew Finley Jr., 21, who has a criminal record
dating back at least five years.

He was charged with killing two Charlotte
residents in a wilderness area about 125 miles
northwest of the region where Rudolph is
believed to be hiding.

Burke County Sheriff Richard Epley said Finley
recently bragged to friends and relatives that he
could elude law enforcement agents as well as
Rudolph, also a skilled survivalist.

``He's followed the escapades of Eric Rudolph
and he's amazed by it. He feels like this man's
getting all kinds of attention he's never
gotten. And he's wanting attention,'' Epley said.

``He knows the area real well, big camper and
hiker. ... He knows how to set snares and trap
rabbits and eat berries,'' Epley said.

Derek Andrew Marston, 24, and Tommi Danielle
Byrd, 24, were found shot and slashed
Sunday at a campsite along Spence Ridge Trail,
about 100 miles northwest of Charlotte.

There was no indication Finley, who lives in
Hickory, knew the victims.

Officers searched a 10-mile radius of an area
near the Pekin community on the southern edge of
the Uwharrie National Forest, about 60 miles
east of Charlotte, after finding Marston's stolen
car, a sheriff's dispatcher said.

Meanwhile, federal officers searching the
Nantahala National Forest for Rudolph say cooler
overnight weather should give their heat-seeking
equipment an edge in detecting his presence.
The hunt for Rudolph by air has been hindered by
the thick leaf canopy and warm temperatures.
