I want to tell you about a great 5 day backpacking experience.
Three of us hiked the Gold Rush trail of '98 last summer from
Skagway Alaska to Lake Bennett, Yukon over the famous Chilkoot
Pass. This is the same trail that thousands of gold seekers
followed to the Klondike gold fields in 1898. All along the
trail there are artifacts of those times, boots, kettles, saws,
canoes etc - a sort of living museum - . Half an hour on to the
trail we encounteded a black bear - no problem- we considered it
a good omen! and from then on it was sunny skies and great
scenery. Day three was the toughest as we went over the pass pass
and into a landscape full of glaciers and rock. We took the
narrow guage Whitepass railway back to Skagway. If you want more
