Temperatures are finally expected to warm up this weekend
in the Yellowstone Park area. The winter had deep snow and the
spring was cool and wet. The result is predictable -- flooding.

Flooding is likely on Park rivers and streams and on or near the
Shoshone and Bridger-Teton National Forests.

Snowpack in the lower elevations is presently about 500% of normal;
at high elevations over 140%. At 9300 feet on the Two Ocean Plateau
(SE corner of Yellowstone), snowpack is presently 183% of normal.
The depth of snow in the high mountains has actually been increasing
for the last week.

If you go down a Forest Service back road early this weekend, pay
attention to the stream. It could rise and leave you stranded
miles from town.

Roads already damaged by flooding near Jackson, Wyoming, are the
Granite Creek road, the Gros Ventre River road, and the Fall Creek
road.

Congress has cut Forest Service funding drastically, and washed-out
roads may not be repaired or reopened this year, or until funding
increases. This is true nationally as well as in the NW corner of
Wyoming.
