If it gets below 50, my 20 degree bag feels too cold, and so I'm going to
get a new one. Theres three I'm looking at: a LL Bean bag with Lite Loft
(the lightest but most expensive), a Cabelas Bag with Quallofil, and a
Slumberjack bag stuffed with Hollofil II (the least expensive by far but
also the heaviest). All are similarly rated at about 0 degrees. Are
there any advantages or disadvantages of these 3 stuffings other than what
I assume to be the thermal protection-to-weight ratio. Also, other than
LL Bean (which I know has good stuff), does anyone know about the quality
of the other two companies bag's.

Thanks,
Dave

I recently bought a slumber Jack Everest Elite. Like the bag you mentioned
mine is also filled with holofil II. I have only used it two time so far,
but i've been very happy and impressed with the quality of the bag. I
am also a very cold natured person and damn near got too hot in the
bag. My one gripe is that holofil won't compress worth crap, and gawds
is it heavy. But, if your not planning extened trips backpacking, I
don't think you could go wrong with a Slumber Jack.

So your bag is too hot, it won't compress, and it's too heavy. What
is it that you like about it?

I have a North Face bag, rated 0 degrees, and I have the very same
problems. I've used it at -15 degrees and slept fine. In the summer,
I leave it partially unzipped. Mine is filled with the old Polarguard,
which is notoriously (I'm told, and apparently it's so) difficult to stuff.
Compression straps don't seem to help much. And it's heavy. I can't
wait until I can afford to buy a new one.

There hangs the tale why some of us will overexted our budgets and by goose-
down filled Gortex covered sleeping bags. I just pack it in its stuff sack,
then a large plastic bag covered by a heavier plastic bag. I fell in a
river recently and my bag was totally dry. In fact, it may have provided some
flotation. No human invention has yet equalled what God put on a goose!!
