Any opinions on the Basic Designs Ergomat/Equalizer vs. the Therma-Rest series?

I have used both of these pads. Personally I swear by the ThermaRest. Yes,
it weighs more than a foam pad and yes, it is worth every ounce. My wife
uses an equalizer she prefers the three dimensional approach, she feels
that it fits her body better and has virtually done away with sore backs in
the morning. Which is best for you? Try to find freinds who might let you
borrow them for a weekend for comparison
Good Luck

I've used both and prefer the Basic Designs. My problem with it was a
pinprick leak in one of the many seams that I finally gave up trying to
fix. I've also moved on to the ridgerest 5/8" thick pad and leave the
mattresses at home. Weight was a deciding factor for me. Also, I was once
caught in the Emigrant Wilderness for four days in a snowstorm and what
allowed me to stay relatively dry in very wet inside-the-tent conditions
was a full length ridgerest. My friend, with his 3/4 thermarest started
suffering after two days from wet and cold feet.

I can't speak for Equalizer, but I can for Therma-rest. I have the full length version
and swear by it. It's tough, self inflating and very comfy - like a bed on the trail. It
has a lifetime warranty too. A friend had a problem, sent it in and received a brand
new one in the mail. I think it's lighter than most - an important consideration. Does
the Equalizer inflate ? This is important for thermal insulation. I had to do it over I'd
buy Thermarest. Hope this helps.

I've also got both and take out whatever fits my mood.
I like the basic design's pillow-but I can carry another pillow, take
the thermarest, slip it into the thermarester chair, and actually have
the most lovely of backpacking luxuries-a place to sit with back
support. Weighs more, but worth it.

I purchased my Basic Designs Equalizer back when I was 17 years old... I'm turning 44 this August and it finally sprung a few leaks this year.... That WAS ONE GOOD MAT! I went through Therm-A-Rest like crazy from 14 years old to 17 when I first purchased this one because of the individual air pockets and being majorly frustrated with Therm-A-Rests products... It was one of the best purchases I ever made! Now the only problem is, trying to find another one. I haven't seen them on the market for quite some time. Does anyone know if Basic Designs is still around. Because I'd love to give them my business again! That product for today's standards was SPECTACULAR! Yes I know this is a really old post, but it's the only post online I could find about Basic Designs The Equalizer..... so I'll ask here... and pray someone knows something!
