Gloves: what's the state-of-the-art material?

Hi,
Please bear with my probable FAQ; I didn't see any equipment advice on the
group or the home page(s).
Rather than distill manufacturer hype, I'd like to hear people's opinions
on the various insulating materials available in the form of gloves. I am
interested in general-purpose gloves, not alpine or work/climbing gloves.

As with most cold-weather stuff, layering is the trick. For greatest warmth my choice is a mitten-type shell (GoreTex with seams carefully sealed or fully waterproof) and fleece-type gloves inside. You may also benefit from a vapor-barrier layer (disposable plastic gloves are often available at drug stores, medical
supply stores, etc.) next to the skin.
