My Narco 120 is in need of replacement. The Narco 810R is a bit too
expensive for me so I was looking into the Michel TKM 11X which is a direct
slide-in replacement or the ICOM A200. If anyone has any comments or
suggestions about either radio, it would be appreciated.

Also, the problem with my Narco 120 is that after it warms up (about 1/2
hour), when I transmit, it is very garbled. It receives great. Has anyone
experienced this and could tell me what it would take to correct the
problem.

Thanks

My experience with the Michel/TKM line has always been quite positive.
Sounds like a transistor is starting to fail on your radio. If you
can get a good local guy to look at it, it may be worth trying to
save.

That is not a normal failure mode for a semiconductor. They either fail all the
time or not at all. It is VERY unusual to have a silicon transistor fail in a
"warmup" mode.

I've got one that does the same thing. I just haven't gotten around to pulling
it apart and finding out why. If you find out first, please post and save me a
few hours of troubleshooting. If I find out first, I'll do the same for you.

When you key up that transmitter that is the peak load on the power
supply. Start looking there. Also look at the final stage on the
output, a mismatch on the antenna could push enough power back into
the amp to cause it to overheat.

Well, must be a vacuum tube failure, then!! :-)

We have used the Icom A-200 and love them. Good power out (7 watts),
easy to use, looks good, and it's an Icom. The new TSO verion -100
makes the FAA paperwork a snap, but the standard would be fine for a
homebuilt or expermental. I think they are the same radio inside.

Can you just slide the ICOM into the Narco tray? If not, you'll quickly
rack up avionics shop labor charges that will erode any savings you may find
on the hardware.

We replaced our Narco 120 with Narco's slide-in replacement, the 810R. It
gives you the digital flip-flop, and is a simple, 10-second replacement. No
muss, no fuss -- just a logbook entry.

I highly recommend the 810R -- it's been great for us.

Jay why don't you quit crossposting? When you cross post as you do, it just
dilutes each NG.

why are you singling out jay? he merely replied to a message that was
already crossposted, as did all the previous posters. if he is guilty of
not trimming the groups, then so is everyone else who responded before
he did.

re the o.p. -- i like both radios. i have a slight preference for the icom,
but in this case, the ease of replacement (just slide in vs. rewire and
mount a new tray), i would probably go with the tkm -- it's a fine radio
also.
