I am enquiring from owners of Ultralights, who are are using a Rotax 618
motor to either 3axis, Trikes, gyrocopters. I would like any info re the
performance, reliabilty etc of this Motor.

The 618 is, for the most part, the same as a 582. The 618 provides 10hp
more only at full throttle. Good for float planes that need the extra to
overcome the resistance of water otherwise useless. Why spend the extra
money unless you need it.

Thanks for your imput...I have received several private replies re the
618 and was informed that Rotax has now pulled the plug on the 618.
Here in OZ I made enquiries this date to the Oz distributor and this is
correct.
There is a new 582 out with improvements.

Cheers Peter

The 618 is a much better engine than the 582 in at least two ways.

First, the engine has a differential thermostat. It directs engine
coolant to the radiator or back to the engine, thereby ,maintaining a
proper coolant temp regardless of the operationg power, etc.

This feature is so good, they are putting it on the 'new and improved'
582.

The second feature inaddition to a slightly larger displacement, is the
rave valves. Some people hate 'em, I love 'em.

I use Valvoline oil rathe than the incorrect Pennzoil for air cooleds
and have had no problems for 150 hours.

Never had them out, or serviced the raves in any way. I do have a manual
valve for cycling them during a runup though. I used the choke system on
the gt500 since the 618 didn't even come with chokes (enrichment
device). This was a good move anyway, do away with the chokes,,,,,

Where can we get more info on this new 582 are any of the improvements retro
fittable on the old 582. I want to add the new style thermostat/cooling system to
mine if the cost is not to much.

You are kidding, right ???????????????

We are talking about Rotax parts, BRW

The head will cost about 400 plus the double water pump housing plus the
thermostat, etc.

Hi Mark,
yes Rotax have allready brought out the new 582 with the added
features...also with oil injection that only needs some change if you
require it.
Anyway the 618 is not being produced anymore.

Hi Mark,
I gather you do mean the Qicksilver GT500, and that you have a
618 installed in it.

Why do some people hate the 'Rave valves system' is there a problem with
this that requires more care etc.

I had a look at the Quicksiver gt500 last year in my search for a new
ultralight but it is a bit more expensive than others that are also
fully built..

I gather you love the Gt...ever had any problems with it. At the moment
I am hiring out the NZ Bantam b200 a 2seater side by side which is very
nice.
If I buy this type of U/l which is about $10,000 cheaper than the GT I
was looking at the 618 motor. However now that the plug has been
pulled on the 618, the New 582 has incorporated some of the features,
it is probally the way to go.

The extra power and the quietness at speed make for a difference worth
looking for.

A used 618 may be easier to comeby now that they are no longer made.

532's are still a lot of HP for the money,,,,,,,,,,

Rotax 618s are in reasonably extensive use here, fitted to Drifters and
X-Airs. They are 75HP max, a good deal more than the dual carby 582 at
65HP. As far as I know they use the same block as the 582 and fit on
the same mountings. The extra power comes from variable exhaust opening
(called RAVE). These ports must be cleared of carbon periodically, and
there is an extra control alongside the throttle for this purpose. If
you want genuine info on them see "www.austflight.com.au", they offer
the 618 as an alternative to the 582. Richard Eacott is their donc man.
