I am quite new to Microlighting (as it's called here in South Africa). I
have just bought my first trike and I am having a lot of fun with it. Now, I
would (will) have even more fun once I get to do some longer trips. Now this
is where I am getting exceedingly confused.
Most of our small airfields that have fuel available have only 100LL as the
closest to what the Rotax is designed for. Now, inquisitive as I tend to be
I have done some asking around as to whether this is OK for the Rotax 503 or
should I rather make a landing next to a petrol station (somehow...) and get
the car stuff.
Trouble is, for every time I ask a different person, I get a different
answer. Anything from "no problem" and "I only use 100LL" to "no way" and
"burns to hot, will destroy the engine".
What gives ? What is the correct answer ?
Is there anybody out there that has had bad (or good) experiences with 100LL
?

Thanx

Rainier

Eight years with 100LL with different Rotax models (447,503,532 and 582).
We had have any kind of problems caused by 100LL.

My experience over the years will 100 LL is that it tends to form balls inside
the spark plug with some oils. It fouls the top of the pistons. Engine EGT's
run hotter. In the 912 it requires the oil changes to be at 50 hours instead of
100 due to oil contamination. In two strokes ring seizures at lower hours are
more common. Rotax recommends the use of unlead fuel with an octane rating of
more than 89.

Hello Rainier:

You might want to contact Steve Beatty at Airscrew Performance in
Phoenix, Arizona USA. Steve is in the business of rebuilding 2 stroke
aircraft engines. He has rebuilt over 400 engines to date. If I am not
mistaken, Steve runs 100LL in his personal plane. I believe that he has
about 1200 hours on the engine and has yet to tear it down to decarbon.
But it is best to contact him personally and get the details. Hope this
helps you out.
