Listers,

I read somewhere that R & D Aerosports in WI advertises that it makes a tuned
exhaust for a Rotax 503 enabling it to get 61 hp.

Does anyone have direct experience with their product or other one like it?
What is the ease of application? Any major modifications necessary?
Downfalls? etc.

Dyno results show a increase to 62hp on a stock Dual carb 503. We are flying
with one now on our 503 aerotowing Hang Gliders and it has made a big
difference. Jetting stayed about the same but the exhaust temp dropped 50
degrees. Plug color looks great, we have about 10 hours on the engine since
adding the pipe, and the engine is running great.>xhaust for a Rotax 503

Simple bolt on, and add 10hp

Does R&D have a web page or business address?

It is possible, using a wider bore exhaust, to increase significantly the power
output of most Rotax engines. At the same time you will also increase noise
output and wear on the engine.

I know somebody who races hovercraft with a Rotax engine vastly uprated - he
gets a much shorter life out of them but considers this acceptable in the
application. The same chap is director of a microlight manufacturer and I've
never heard him suggest that he would do anything similar to an engine on an
aircraft - his company actually put a de-rated exhaust on the 582 to reduce
noise.

In the United Kingdom, fitting such an exhaust must definitely be approved
through a BMAA or manufactuers major modification otherwise it invalidates the
permit to fly. A new CAA noise certificate would probably also be required.

I can't of-course, speak for the regulations in other countries.

The guy you want to talk to is Robert Rayford
R & D Motorsports
7701 SCHOFIELD AVE
Schofield, WI 54476-4624
715-355-0536

He and a friend do exhaust systems for snowmobiles and watercraft "Jet Skis" etc.

We had our Ultralight Chapter 75 meeting at their shop two months ago and they
had a demo engine set up on the dyno and ran it with the stock exhaust and then
changed to the tuned exhaust and showed the different power curves etc.
There was also a helicopter (Roterway I think) body there that they were working
on a custom exhaust system for. A friend Paul Buss has an Avid MK4 N392SB
with a 618 that was used as a test bed for the 582/618 version of their exhaust
system.
As far as I know he is still flying and is quite happy with the new exhaust
system.
If you were at OSH last year you may have seen the plane with the exhaust system
installed, It was at the south end of the field between the ultralight barn and
the
ultralight runway. Paul is on-line (buss...@netnet.net) or I suppose you could
write or call him and
ask about what he likes, or dosn't, about the R&D exhaust, and how it has
preformed for him so far....
