HI, does anyone know of the smallest engine ever used in an
ultralight? I am looking for a very small, lightweight engine of only
about 8 to 10 hp. Hopefully much less than 40lb complete with prop,
ignition, Fuel P, Oil P, etc.

We used to make a powerplant based on a West Bend go -cart engine. With
our reduction unit and a 48" dia. prop, it produced about 80# thrust
with a standard muffler and about 100# with a tuned pipe. The engine was
rated at 10 hp. You could also add an additional carb and get about 10
more #'s thrust.
I don't know what your building but remember you'll need a lot more
thrust than that which is needed at cruise, to get to cruise speed. So
don't sell yourself short in the thrust dept. the more the better...

Hi Steve:

The Solo 210 engine from Germany would certainly fall under your
criteria. It is a single cyllinder, two stroke engine of 210 cm3.
It is widely used in powered parachutes and different companies
offer it in configurations from 12 to about 20 HP. The engine
weighs 12 kg (25 lb?) with gear.

There's also the Lark from England with similar weight and power.
That's all I can think off being made for manned airplanes. Of
course you can look into model aircraft engines but I hear they're
a mess to run and are not reliable enough to entrust your life to
them.

Hope this helps,
Roland

PS: Please make shure the group gets informed if you discover
another engine that fits your criteria. I myself am looking for a
light engine to power my UL Thermal Airship and the Solo or Lark
will probably have to do the job if I cannot find alternatives.

the solo 210 is used in many back-pack power units for powered
paragliding. Weighs about 12 kg....can't remember the thrust...for more
thrust a light reduction drive can be used.

How about the Radne Raket120?

http://www.radne.se/english/raket/raket12i.htm

It produces 15hp & weighs 14lb 5oz. (Including ignition, cord starter,
carb, clutch, toothed pulley, forced air cooling fan & cowling). The
53 inch composite prop which is used on the Mosquito motor harness for
foot launched hang gliders weighs 1lb 11oz.

My hummingbird uses two Partner cut-off saw two stroke engines
utilizing the v-belt drive to turn a prop. The get between 9 and 10
hp standard, supposedly 12 with a tuned pipe.
