Hello,

I have an '80 Subaru engine with 254K miles, in very good running condition. I
am the original owner, and the engine has never needed or had any work done. It
is still in the car, which is still on the road.

I am wondering if this model (1600cc / EA71) is a desirable ultralight engine,
and if so approximately how much would such an engine bring on the market? If
the price justifies the effort, I would consider offering the engine for sale.
I live in Lakewood, near Tacoma, WA.

Obviously, I am not "into" ultralights, but as the time grows near for the car
itself to be retired, I was wondering if the engine, which has always been a
model of reliability, might not find its way into someone's aircraft to be used
for many more years of service (after a specialized rebuild, of course).

Any help with this question would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Dave from Washington State

It's my understanding that the EA71 will produce
around 45-50 hp direct drive, and possibly 70 hp
with a redrive. Yes, it's a viable ultralight
engine.

Prices I don't know, it would have to be completely
rebuilt before I would fly it...

A viable airplane engine...yes. A viable *legal* US ultralight engine
... not unless it can miraculously lose a bunch of pounds.

Dave,
Your EA71 has a number of miles, but yes, it wold be a desirable motor for
anyone interested. You probably wouldn't get more than $200. for it though.
What ever you do, don't just trash it. someone will find a good home for it.
The EA81 I put into my CGS HAWK had about 78K on it and I didn't have to do
anything to it. I paid $350. for it thre years ago. Good luck and thanks for
giving someone the chance. Subaru makes one fine engine that will offer lots
of reliable airtime for someone's plane.
