Well, for reasons which have nothing whatsoever to do with my ability to
afford them, I have developed a fondness for reading magazines that feature
aircraft for sale (Trade-A-Plane, Air-USA, and so forth). I'm not too familiar
with some of the acronyms used there, though I've guessed at a few -- TT is
(I think) Tach Time, SMOH - since major over haul? SPOH - since previous over
haul?, TBO - ????, TTLN - ????. Can anyone fill in the blanks and/or tell
me how far off I am on the ones I guessed at? Thanks!

Oh, by the way, I did look for a FAQ in the rec.aviation.owning group, but
didn't see one. If this information is readily available somewhere, please
point me to it (and sorry for the wasted bandwidth).

TT - Total Time (usually airframe)
SMOH - Since Major Overhaul (since engine newly rebuilt)
SPOH - Since Partial Overhaul (engine patially rebuilt: top-end, a cylinder,
piston,etc.)
TBO - Time Between Overhaul (time that can elapse between an engine needs to
be rebuilt-caution: not all engines make it to
their TBO. The larger engines suffer more from
shock cooling and if an owner does not have the
propper training and/or abuses the engines they
will fall short of TBO)

TAP (Trade-A-Plane) usually has a side bar someplace in the ads that has
many of these defined.

TT = Total Time Airframe & Engine if there isn't a seperate engine time listed
TTAE = Total Time Airframe & Engine.
TTRE = Total Time Right Engine. Extrapolate from here....
SMOH - since major over haul? Correct.
SPOH = Since Prop Overhaul.
TBO = Mfgr "Suggested" overhaul period.
TTLN ???
TTSN = Total Time Since New. Same as TTAE.

If someone takes the time to list in one of these publications they are
probably looking for what the consider top dollar depending in conditions.

I have seen VERY few deals listed in a publication that even came close
to what I have paid for the planes I have.
So don't be too quick to assume you can't afford it.

This is R.A.Student so to make this appropriate. If you will end up buying
a plane after tou get your license you may consider getting one to do your
training in. You will probably learn more and may save some money.

I know instructors that can't explain how the carb heat or Mags work.
If you own the plane and work with your mechanic things can make a lot
more sense.

I think the guy I know that bought a Bell Jet Ranger before he got his
license because he wanted to start a 135 Operation was bit of a leap though.

In article <2geu29$c...@hpscit.sc.hp.com>,

I thought..
SPOH Since Prop Overhaul on constant speed props..
SFREM Since Factory Remanufacture
IRAN Since Inspect and Repair As Neccesary...sort of an overhaul of
the airframe..
STOH Since Top Overhaul ...not very well defined, but generally
involeing pistons and such.
NDH No Damage History

One of the FBOs had a humorous list of what these abbreviations stand for.
I don't remember many of them, but an example is
SMOH: serious money owed here
I think that says it all. Anyone out there in net. land have the whole list--
we can all stand a little levity now and then!

Happy flying
