I see license descriptors such as PP-SEL / PP-ASEL from you US guys on
the site... I guess theses are along the lines of the UK PPL(A)
(aeroplane) PPL(M) (microlight) etc...
Can anyone explain what the PP-XXXX designations mean?
Just curious...
Thanks...
Andy
SP - Student Pilot
PP - Private PIlot
CP - Commercial Pilot
ATP or ATR - Air Transport Pilot
Ratings modify the basic certificate. Some of these are
SEL - Single Engine Land ( assumes Airplane )
ASEL - Airplane, Single Enging Land
MEL - Multi Engine Land ( assumes Airplane )
AMEL - Airplane Multi Engine Land
SES - Single engine Sea
MES - Multi Engine Sea
SMELS - Single, Multi, Engine Land and Sea
IA - Instrument, Airplane. For a mechanic it also
means he holds an Inspection Authorization.
I don't know what abbreviations are current for the rotary wing and balloon
ratings these days.
Instructors are:
CFI - Certified Flight Instructor ( NOT Chief Flight Instructor, it is
comparable to QFI ( Qualified Flight Instructor ) in Britain.
CFIA - Certified Flight Instructor - Airplane
CFII - Certified Flight Instructor - Instrument
MEI - Multi Engine Instructor
It can get pretty confusing. Also, when you add ratings you might have
different certificate priveleges on different ratings. For example,
you could have ATP for Airplane, Single and Multi Engine, with Commercial
priveleges for Hot Air Balloon, Glider, Helicopter, etc.
I hope this helps you figure out some of the brag strings! :-)

Actually it is Private Pilot _Airplane_ Single Engine Land. Aircraft is a
little to broad a term.

That clears it up for me...

I'm curious as well. Somebody fill us poor Brits in :)

PP = Private Pilot
CP = Commercial Pilot
ATP = Air Transport Pilot
ASEL = Airplane Single Engine Land
AMEL = Airplane Multi Engine Land
AMES = Airplane Multi Engine Sea (and so forth)
IA = Instrument Airplane
CFI = Certificated Flight Instructor
CFII = CFI Instrument
MEI = Multi-engine Instructor
I think the glider people and rotorheads could just use "G" or "H"
somewhere in there.
We don't get licensed to fly, we get certificated. :-)

And the CFI abbrev I saw for all those was CFI-AIM for Airplane, Instrument,
Multi-Engine. Not sure if it's "official" but I've seen it quite often, and
use it myself at times.
