Anybody do this, and if so, why? My instructor wears plugs under his
ANR headset. I just have a passive headset, and while I have started
wearing plugs on the ramp due to jets operating nearby, I have been
taking them out before putting on my headset. Just curious if this is
a common practice, and what the advantages (or disadvantages are).

I wear earplugs under my Softcomm C-60's. They're not ANR. I just mainly
wear them because it makes it easier to understand the cockpit and ATC
communications. Earplugs filter out the rest of the noise that your headset
doesn't catch. Besides, they're cheap compared to ANR. I guess I kinda
inherited the wearing-earplugs thing from Dad. He was an Army helicopter
pilot. He wore plugs when he flew even though he had a flight helmet with
hearing protection (however lame it may have been in those
days...1966-1982). So, when I started flying lessons, I had a pair of
earplugs ready to go. I've forgotten to wear them on a few occasions, and
man, does it make a difference.

Just my thoughts....give it a try and see for yourself.

You know, I don't get this whole earplug thing. My DC H10-30's
*are* my earplugs. The world goes pretty quiet when I put those
things on. I can definitely see that it could be necessary around
military hardware, larger civie turbines, and probably some
helicopters, but it's never occurred to me that I oughta put something
between my ear-drums and that headset.

I alweays try to wear earplugs under my flight helmet. I fly CH-47Ds
in the Army and it is the loudest helicopter in our inventory. I also
wear them in airplanes. I do have some hearing damage after 7 yrs of
helicopter flying, I didn't always wear earplugs.

I always wore earplugs under my headset when flying in C-130s in the Air
Force. I probably ought to do it now.

Air Force headsets in the 1970s weren't all that great at noise reduction.
Still, the more noise you block out, the better off you are.

I do it for the same reason I wear them when I go to loud concerts...I want
to hear what I want to hear (the music). I sure am glad I'm wearing
earplugs while flying and some turkey's radio offers up the way-too-often
garbled-screeching mess.

Actually though, Billy, I forgot to put them in before I cranked the
Citabria a couple weeks ago and just went on without them....was a bit too
busy to even think about putting them in. ;-)

You sound a lot like my Dad. He flew CH-47A's in Vietnam. Flew other
models as well. Spent a lot of time at Rucker. Has substantial hearing
damage even though he wore earplugs.

I've used earplugs under my passive headset. I think they work well and
don't require that the headset be so tight on your head.

In my real job, I needed earplugs and often needed to wear them all day.
I found that many types of foam plugs were just too stiff and caused my
ear canal to become irritated.

I found one pair that are much softer than the common yellow models.
These are the "Sound Defense" earplugs model# 13845 from Lab Safety Supply
(800) 356-0783.
