My son, a 17 year old High School student wants to get into the aviation field.
Can someone point me in the right direction for:

1) a college
2) where to find out all the fields of aviation

Many thanks

Hi Stephen,

Depending on what part of the country you are in, or want your son to
attend college in...there are great aviation oriented colleges in
Florida, Colorado, California, and Texas. Go to your local library for
a complete listing, or contact the Aircraft Owners and Pilots
Organization (AOPA) for further info! Best of luck to him, and you!

I went to Central Washington University, Ellensburg, WA. A small campus of
about 7000. My degree is B.S. Flight Officer. Although now they have
several degree specializations that make more sense--such as aviation
management, airport management, aviation maintenance management.

After going through the program though my recommendation is this: If your
son has other interests such as computer programming or information systems
management, get a a four year degree in that and do the flying as part of
separate program. The reason is simply to have something to go back
to...After graduating I spent 2.5 years at Microsoft and 2.5 years as a
computing consultant making some much needed money. Realizing that I missed
flying, I am getting back into it knowing that if I stay current with the
computer industry I can always get a job if something with aviation doesn't
pan out.

Just another opinion,

Mr. Blakley,

I've taken the liberty of providing probably more than
you may need in the way of schools. The most well known
will likely be Embry-Riddle and University of North
Dakota. Good luck to you and your son!

SIU does have an aviation program. So does Parks. They are NOT the
same program. For the aviation options at SIU try this URL instead.
