I am ready to kill.
Here I am, supposed to solo next week. Should be happy, right? Well not
me! I got my medical cert 5 or 6 weeks ago (anticipation!). Kept it in
my wallet, on my person at all times, away from all harm...or so I
thought.
Last week my girlfriend did my laundry. You guessed it -- the Med Cert
was in my wallet, in my pants, in the washing machine, in tiny little
yellow bits!
Not one to panic, I called my Doc who told me I need to get a duplicate
from the FAA. No problem. Call the FAA and they are happy to provide me
with a dupe! Just send them some info and a check for $2! Cool, me
thinks, as I jot this down. The next words I head nearly gave me a heart
attack -- my cert will be in the mail to me IN 4 to 6 WEEKS!!!
I can't wait that long! 4 to 6 WEEKS???? I am about to SOLO!!! Don't
they KNOW that???
Its the gov't. I should have figured as much.
Meanwhile, I need to know if anyone has had this happen to them before and
how long did it really take? Is there another way to get a new cert?
Could I go to another doctor and get a new one? (I'd pay the doc bill
gladly instead of wait).
Please help!
Signed,
Forlorn and without hope.

I am warning you now -- you will get FLAMED!

To prevent that problem as you are also required to carry your logbook
with you on X-C flights, my instructor taped an envelope to the back
cover of my logbook and put my certificate in there.
Hope this helps!

Boy, you are spoiled :-)
In Israel, Where I learn to fly, you have to wait 4 months (4!!) if
you fail a written test (and there are SEVEN written tests) and
ofcourse- no success in the written tests... no checkride !
Learn to appreciate the pleasant flying atmosphere where you live :-)
.....4-6 weeks delay.... HA!

I just plain lost mine right before my solo. (Never did find it...) I
called the FAA, and they faxed me a letter indicating my medical status.
I took that letter to the senior flight instructor who approved it. I
believe I received the letter by fax the same day I asked for it. Good
luck.

Although it won't help you get it back, I'll give you a tip that might
keep you from losing it. At the airport where I train, the instructors
have every student tape their medical certificate inside the front
of their logbook when they get it (on one side, of course, so it
can be endorsed on the back as necessary). It's a lot harder to lose
or wash a big blue logbook than a little yellow piece of paper.

Doesn'y your instructor have to sign the back? If its laminated, how can
he do that??
This one's tough but follow along closely... Laminate it *after*
your instructor signs it.

My opinions, not Argonne’s...
You know what? I have never put my logbook through the washing machine.
When I was a student I stapled my medical/student certificate into my
log. There have been a few times since my checkride where I have flown
off without my log book but when I was a student I always had it with me
in the plane (since my CFI and I were always writting in it).
Even though it is no good anymore - it's still in there.

Well, son, you've been signed off for the 152 and the Cub, and don't have
any difficulty with them. I'd be happy to sign you off for the Chipmunk,
but I guess I can't since your license is already laminated.

(No, I no longer have access to the 'Munk)
Greg:
That's the response he's (Forlorned) looking for. I,ve called the Airman
Certification division in the past about replacement tickets. They have
been great, I talk to "Joyce" and I'll tell you that if you have the
right attitude, you're patient and friendly, you'll go along way. I've
had replacements in under a week. The truth..

Yes, you can go to a doc and get another one any time. It'll just
cost ya a few bucks.

I was being sarcastic. There's no space on the back (or front
for that matter) for any instructor to sign anything on my license.
OTOH, I haven't laminated my logbook so the high performance
endorsement for my 182 might be at risk the next time I spill
a Coke... 8^O
Now, if you should happen to leave the logbook in the wash, you're SOL.
Me, I keep an up-to-date photocopy of my logbook at home.

I did that on my own at first. My instructor went to check it one day and
said "Why didn't you just tape an envelope there?" Duh!
So now, the inside cover of my logbook has an envelope taped in place,
which now holds my medical certificate (which is the same piece of paper,
for now) along with my PP-ASEL certificate. As I add ratings, etc., it'll
be a lot easier to replace the old cert. with the new one.

And hope you don't ever want to fly a different aircraft.
It has to get endorsed for each model.
Since a student pilot pretty much has to tote his logbook
around anyhow, I just used to keep mine clipped to the last
page in my book.
