Went for my PPL medical today. Was informed that the new JAR
requirements which came into force July 1 require a more exhaustive
Class 2 medical which costs about three times as much as the old medical
(nice to know after the deadline!)

Does this show that the old UK requirements were inadequate or is it
just more European bureaucracy? How exhaustive is the FAA medical in
comparison?

I did my medical a few months ago and paid £50. There was not a lot to
it, just eyesight, weight, basic heart/lung tests, and a look at a
couple of old injuries.

My neighbour went for hers at the same Doctors a couple of weeks ago,
and had a full ECG, much more in-depth questions, and spent about twice
the time there. It cost her £160.

I really think the old medical was inadequate, and certainly wouldn't
have shown up any heart problems etc. The CAA form went into
excruciating detail, though, although I needed a couple of extra sheets
of paper to detail all my old motorbike-caused broken bones!

Passed the JAA class 2 medical today. Ended up with a glasses-wearing
restriction, which is a right royal pain in the arse as I usually get by
without spectacles, am legal to drive without and so don't have an up to
date prescription.

My doctor says that he is only getting through 2-3 medicals a day under
the new regime, as compared to up to nine previously. Still, he is
getting more than three times the amount for it! His prediction is that
the requirements might be scaled back in a few years, so that might be
some hope for pilots due medicals then.

A tip about the eye test for those who need to sit the full test in the
UK - Dolland and Aitchison will do the comprehensive eye test for
£17.50, I've heard of some local opticians charging up to £50 (note to
lurking Yanks - Dolland and Aitcheson is a chain optometrist over here
advertised by Burt Reynolds and George C Scott - talk about falling from
grace...).
