Sorry to hear of yet another accident, but I think your date in brackets
must be incorrect. You posted the message on 31-5-99, but refer to an
accident on 1-6-99 ?????

Three dead in glider crash

Three people were killed when two gliders collided in
mid-air over the Peak District.

The accident happened in the skies over Great Hucklow
in Derbyshire at about 1530 BST.

The three victims were later named as Brian Curran, 48,
of Altrincham, Cheshire, Caroline Roberts, 36, of
Tideswell, Derbyshire, and Stephen Robertshaw, 40, of
Stockport, Cheshire.

They are understood to be members of the Derbyshire
and Lancashire Gliding Club based in Tideswell. They
are thought to have died almost instantly, and were
certified dead at the scene.

Geoff Garratt, the landlord of the Queen Anne pub in
Great Hucklow, said one of the gliders came down on a
country lane and the other in a ravine.

'Weather was good'

He said the accident happened close to where the
gliders had taken off.

Mr Garratt said: "The weather was quite good and this is
the first accident I have heard of in the area."

He said the area was extremely popular with gliders and
the club was well organised.

Derbyshire police said one of the men was killed in the
glider which came down in the ravine and the other man
and Ms Roberts died in the other aircraft.

A spokesman said the accident was being investigated
by the British Gliding Association and the Civil Aviation
Authority.

Ioan,

We were talking about this today at Wolds. We think one of the gliders(the
single seater) was an LS-7, and the 2 seater was a Grob(?) Twin acro 2. Or
that is what was on BBC news tonight(6:00)bst
