As far as I can recall, there has not been one Monnett design (whether
the monerai glider/self launch, Moni motorglider, Sonerai powerplane)
that did not generate some major structural concern, have a major AD or
emergency flightworthiness issue, or something else major. I am NOT an
expert on these designs, but I have been around long enough to hear
about the common knowledge problems that the designs suffered. I am sure
some of the hearsay is exaggerated, some might be untrue completely, and
some is probably correct. But I personally do not know any experienced
sailplane pilot who is willing to take off in a Monnett design. I know a
whole lot of them who will fly HP's, Dusters, Woodstocks, etc.

No offense or axe to grind with Mr. Monnett, and I wish him the best in
his future kit aircraft endeavors. I just hope he hires a structures
engineer next time.

Read article in August SOARING from happy owner. Contact John Monnet who is
back in business with another similar project (more airplane-like). Be
aware of the care needed in prepping bonded-metal structures... --JHC

I built one in the early eighties and put about 100 hours on it. I wasn't very
pleased with the KFM107e engine, but it was a fun airplane to fly. As I
recall, a couple of Moni went in because the wing skins delaminated, and later
kits used riveted skins. I took all of the parts to a company in Orange county
to have a corrosion inhibiting adhesive primer applied to all parts involved in
the bonding process. Didn't have any problems with the wings. Right after I

sold it, there was an AD concerning the root ribs. Thats all I know (or more
accurately, can remember )
