I am trying to find a web site for a company called Glider Electronics
of Nottingham UK. They are the manufacturers of radio equipment used in
gliders. More specifically, I am trying to find a users manual for a
TM61 radio base unit made by the above company. We have several of these
units at our gliding club, but are having problems getting them to work
properly.

If anyone has further details on either the company or the radio unit
itself, please let me know by e-mail. Remove the nospam. part of the
e-mail address to reply to me.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I think you are wasting your time. The TM6 and TM61 were OK for their time
but always a bit temperemental. Now you would be better buying a handheld
than spending money on these.

I believe TM was Terry somebody who originated the designs but I think he
died and subsequent support wasn't very good. Sorry if that's wrong!

My oldest copies of S & G are 1987 and even in those I can't find any
adverts for TM61, although I do remember what the ads used to be like.

There were (apparently) new units on sale at RD Aviation a couple of years
ago - the address on the labels for Glider Electronics was somewhere around
Dunstable. I'd contact RD for advice, if I were you.

Hi Gareth,
I can symphasise with you, we have just purchased a new two
seater and we had a couple of TM61's lying about so I fitted one, the
receive audio was awfully distorted. I then tried the other unit,
same fault. I work as an electronics engineer so I took them into
work and checked them out - still poor audio. I then traced part of
the receive circuitry out, I couldn't fully understand why the
designer had chosen such an odd ball circuit. There is an IC (CA3028
?) which provides most of the IF and Detector strip - the signals
going into this chip a OK but distorted when the come out,
unfortunately they are the same on both radios - this chip is now
obsolete (some surplus dealers may still have some) - maybe this chip
had died or it is just a poor/marginal design in the first place !

I agree with the other replies, there are very tempremental and you
would be better investing (the money aspect was nothing compared with
the time wasted) in something else.

Our units have a Dunstable address on them - I will have a look at
the airfield today and mail you with any details I find.

I bought a TM62, the ground version of the TM61 about 20 years ago from
Dunstable, for about 200 GBPs. It worked fine until about a year ago
when the tx packed up. This radio is easy to work on, and I diagnosed a
dead output transistor. These are not easily available, but Gerry
Gillard was able to provide one, and also the driver transistor, which
was the real culprit.
If you like I'll ask him if he minds me giving you his address.
