Are there in existence any custom designed trailers for two gliders in the same
box? i.e. wider axesl, more substansial frame, and four wheels?
Any references to past articles or contact info for owners of such?

The main constraint is California law which permits axle widths up to 108".
Stuffing two fuselages and 4 wings between that is a challenge, but I am making
progress.
Keep in touch and I will forward my results.

I have heard it said, but not seen the trailer, that one of the uk agents for a
well known manufacturer has a trailer which takes two single seaters, and is
used when they import a couple of gliders at a time.

I have seen - nay, packed - a three-glider trailer. It's a "Queen Mary"
trailer made originally, I believe, for the RAF to carry a Venture (Falke)
motor glider. Brian Spreckley of the European Soaring Club has (or had) one
into which we packed three Pegases once. Two fuselages facing forwards on
each side, one facing backwards between 'em, wings and tails all over the
place. Towed just fine behind a big Mercedes estate.
