Anyone know of any good articles, available on the web, describing the
application of Mylar wing seals? Lost one in a wave, and need to replace
it.

Rick,
I recommend that you sand the wing and the Mylar with 220 grit sand paper in
the 10MM wide area where the Double Back Stickie applied. Then wipe down both
with Accetone just before the Stickie goes on. JJ

Don't know about an article; have done it a couple of time.
Here some tips:

- The tape shrinks when it is cold. Applied in this state, it will rise in
waves when it gets warm.
Don't apply it in a cold workshop. Wait for a nice, sunny day.
- Get off the old stuff. Everything! Completely!
- Sand the tape and the glider surface where the tape is applied.
- Get tape and surface fat-free. Completely! Wash with Aceton. Take your
time.
- Ideally have two friends helping you to stretch the tape tight (10-20
pounds) while applying it.

There was a letter or brief article in Soaring not too long ago
concerning mylar wing seals. I think concern was expressed over
the technique of using two mylar strips, one on the control surface
and one on the wing that overlapped the other mylar. The concern
was the possibility of the control surface mylar working itself
free and becoming a hazard by seriously interfering with the airfoil.

Anyway, the writer supported what has already been said about
sanding and cleaning the surface for the double-sided tape.
He also recommended that after the installation the mylar
should be pressed firmly against the double-side tape. He
used a suitable bearing to "roll over" the mylar while
pressing firmly down. I believe he is a mechanic and has a
lot of experience with mylar seal installations.

In my opinion, one of the mistakes is applying the tapes in long lengths.
They are easier to handle in shorter pieces, say 2 per aileron and 2 per
flap length. Definitely at LEAST 2 per elevator length. After
installation, a narrow piece of white tape across the joints completes the
air seal.
BUT the REAL reason is that shorter lengths act like a rip stop. If a
section comes loose, it doesn't continue to peel up the rest of the seal.
I believe that some of the problems with elevator tape failures would
have been much less catastophic if only part of the tape had failed.

My seals appear to be single piece for the full length of my wings top &
bottom. You can be sure I will check these carefully every flight! They are
attached cleanly with the superb craftsmanship apparent throughout the
entire glider.
