Winch for hanging glider underneath hangar roof.

Hello,

I am looking for an electric winch for hanging a standard class glider
underneath a hangar roof. Does anybody know of such a product? I am
also interested in plans for such a winch based on off-the-shelf
components. Many thanks in advance!

A quality winch of the type fitted to a 4*4 is a good bet.

The drum will hold a good length of cable.
You can operate from a 12v battery kept charged by a solar panel.

If you have 220v then you get more for your money.

The setups I have seen used have a pair of slings under the cockpit and
tailboom with a speader beam between them. When the assembly is hoisted
into the roof the load is transfered to a fixed anchor and is not kept
on the winch. This way several ships can be hoisted / lowered with a
single winch.

You can also do it with a hand winch but its a lot of work!

I have two aircraft (ASH26E and Aeronca Champ) suspended using Harbor
Freight 1300 lb electric wenches and 12" wide nylon slings from
McMaster-Carr. The wenches are "dirt cheap" at about $159 USD (110 VAC).
They do have to be modified for this use, as the control cable is only 5.5'
long. I replaced the wench control cable with 12 ga wire of the necessary
length (an option would be to use smaller wire and install relays at the
wench end). Two wenches are employed for each aircraft, so the wenches are
running at well under their design load.

you put a wry smile on my face and I'm sure a few others.
Wenches instead of winches.... If "wench" means the same over there as it
does in the UK.

1. 1300lb wenches - wow she's a big girl !
2. Wenches are dirt cheap - sorry can't agree.......
3. Wench control with 12 ga wire - sorry a 20" rope won't control mine!!

Not just thinking. When I talk to him lately, he's at the hangar half
the time, "working on the hangar" he tells me. Well, now I understand
why he's doing that instead of flying. Those wenches take a lot of
attention to keep them working right.
