Hi,

Can anybody tell me about any gliding clubs in South America? Especially ones
in Chile in the roaring 40s of latitude. I want to ridge soar the Andes. (Wow)

My father and myself have done some very interesting flying in the Chilean
Andes a couple of years ago. He has flown some flights with more than 800 km,
I think there was one out-and-return with more than 1000 kilometers one day.
It is very fascinating flying, but you need a lot of oxygen as you almost
always fly above 5000 meters MSL.

If you need any POC in Santiago, give me some email, I could tell you some
names.

Regards
Ralf

Hi, my name is Martin berinstein, I am originally from Argentina, and I
will try to find out some information for you, and E mail it asa soon as I
can gather it.
I Fly ASW 19 out of Pepperell, MA., but have been an active soaring pilot
in Argentina.
Check some Soaring Magazaines, I seem to remeber that Karl Striedrik wrote
extensive articles about Chile.
There is Patagonic Soarng, they fly out of San Martin Del los Andes, in
Argentina, they take care of all your needs, they are very well organized.
Write to you soon, Good Luck

I just returned from a month in Chile. It's interesting that this
thread is still going (it started before I left!).

Before I left, a fellow netter told me to check out the Las Condes
glider club in the suburb of the same name near Santiago. It's a
small, uncontrolled strip NE of the city. It's not on many of the
road maps, though, and I managed to mistakenly go to the Tobalaba
airport (also in the NE suburbs of Santiago, but on all the maps)
instead. When I realized I was at the wrong airstrip, I called over
to the glider club at Las Condes and was told they were only flying on
weekends (this was on a Monday). Saturdays at the club are general
flying days, and Sundays they have some sort of contest. I can
personally confirm there was some glider activity the previous Sunday
because I was in the city park on Cerro San Cristobal and saw a glider
on tow to the NE. This was about a week and a half ago - perhaps if
you're there more in the middle of summer there would also be activity
during the week - I don't know.

Fortunately, Tobalaba is a good general aviation airport, with a nice
flying club. I managed to hook up with a local pilot who was glad to
rent a 172 with me. We flew from Santiago over to the coast, and
cruised the beach at Vina del Mar at 500'. It wasn't a day of soaring
the Andes, as I had hoped I might be able to do, but it wasn't a bad
substitute. And 1.5 hrs of flying in a plane with a "CC" number was a
nice little "trophy" for my power logbook. :)

To the person who originally asked about soaring in Chile, if you drop
me an e-mail, I can give you the name and address of the fellow I flew
with out of Tobalaba. He's not a glider pilot, but he would have
access to the correct names and phone numbers at the Las Condes club,
so you could arrange something in advance.

Happy soaring.

I'll be visiting Uruguay (Montevideo) and Columbia (Bogota) this winter--are
there any gliding opportunites in these areas?
