Does anybody have any information or advice regarding the shipping of a
glider and trailer from Southern California to the UK. My obvious thought is
either RO-RO ship as is, or in a shipping container. Also, do they have to
be shipped from the US east coast or could a west coast port be used.

I realise that I have to de-register the glider with the FAA also and then
get it BGA registered once in the UK.

Indications of typical costs and any shipping company contact info would be
appreciated. Also any 'how-not-to-do-it' stories would be useful.

Thanks in advance

I brought a glider to the US from Germany last November (Bremerhaven to Port
Hueneme,CA). It cost about $40 in port fees in Germany and $2200 for
shipping in California. The line was Walenius-Wilhelmsen. They stopped in GB
before heading through the Panama Canal. They do the same on the way back.
They have a website. Pretty slick operation.

Paul,
Be sure and get a *certificate of airworthiness for export* from the FAA. The
Brits will need that to get it regestered over there.

Not required nor bothered with in my experience, having exported a sailplane
to the UK.

The buyer will pay shipping, wharfage, and VAT. The sailplane will not go
on the CAA registry, but on the BGA registry. A BGA senior inspector will
issue a CofA based on the condition and any ADs, SBs, and TNs. A much
simpler and more elegant system than FAA compliance and paperwork. Unless
something has changed horribly in the past few years, it's a very simple
process.

WRT Export CofA's in general, were one to import a TC'd German built glider
from the UK to the US, you would need it, but from Germany (as it's an
original piece of documentation). You would also need the clearance letter
from the UK CAA (where the glider was NEVER registered in any case). IMVHO,
all bureaucratic self justifying nonsense that makes sense for commercial
use platforms (apples) being applied to a niche sailplanes (oranges). A
true violation of KISS.
